  • More N5 noises!!

The teeth on my belt make an annoying noise when coming off the pulley. I can't describe it, but its there and it annoys the hell out of me! Spent most of the morning trying to get rid of it but I can't. Its as thought the belt is too tight and each tooth is reluctant to come of the pulley, and they click loudly when they do. I've tried to loosen the belt, which cures it but it then becomes quite floppy in the boom. Anyone elses make the same noise?!

I'm affraid not!, mine is perfect!

Is it the main pulley under the main gear or is it the rear pulley at the tail gear box end?

I can't imagine that the rear pulley will be handed for any reason as the belt should be universal so it should'nt matter if it runs either way, but it might be worth checking the rear pulley to see if it makes a difference.

Also, i've heard of a few people spraying the belt with silicone spray to keep it supple as silicone should'nt damage the rubber like some lubricant's will, so this might be worth a try. Also check to make sure that the belt tensionier roller next to the pulley is free spinning as overtightening these during assembly can stop the roller from spinning freely.

Everything is spinning as it should, I'll give the silicon spray a go but the belt seems fairly supple anyway. I would have flipped the tail pulley on the main shaft, but the screw on the mainshaft collar was on so tight I rounded it trying to get it free. I'll have drill it off at work and order a new collar, then I can flip it.

The tail box doesn't look to be handed, but its not here that the noise is coming from.

I think mine may be making a similiar noise. Its not all the time and sometimes just the first set of tic-tocs I do but its kinda like a chain clinking. I'm pretty sure the belt tension is correct, it doesnt bother me but I do wonder what it is.

this is just when its on the bench and I turn the head. I'm wondering if its what is causing my vibrating/buzzy noise that's all.

I'll stick a little vid on yoo toob later, easier than trying to describe it.

Just read the other n5 noise thread, basically what Matt has described so for me it could be the teeth coming into contact with each other. As I said I'm not worried and will continue to fly this 'amazingness'*

put a squirt of wd40 or even better gt85 on the belt... guaranteed to fix it.

Kinda unlikely but check the main belt pully flanges haven't got bent inward slightly.

Mine was doing the same thing after the first few flights. Sprayed silicone on the belt and all is quiet now.

WD40, GT85 etc. Should NOT be used on belts!!!

Don't put petroleum based lubes on your belt!

They are not designed for use on rubbers and can draw oils from the belt eventualy. better to use silcone spray as mentioned above.

beat me down if im wrong lol.
