  • More N5 woes

yep, managed to destroy the starter shaft and clutch shoe bearing, just trying to start the w@nky thing

Anyone know if the bearing can be replaced easily or is it just another case of put your hand in your pocket and buy a new clutch shoe?

after 5 weeks of one thing or another i'm very close to giving up on nitro....sighs

The bearings can be pressed in, they can also be bought seperately.

How the hell have you managed to do that!!!

You can press a new bearing in there but I'd probably just bung s new clutch and shaft in there and make sure everything is assembled properly!! If your chewing them up it sounds as though there is something wrong somewhere or you have an assembly issue!
      Happy Flying! Thanks - Dave

          Sorry to hear about that,
As said by SynergyMan, how'd you manage to do that?
you must have assembled it slightly out of line.
          Why did'nt your engine start?

I had a few issuse with my 5 to start with but got them sorted, stick with it
          It is worth it,

Had my fourth proper flight today and I'm liking it more with every flght,

Good luck hope it works out

I can honestly say I never had a single problem on mine, never a slip when starting etc. I'd check your clutch/engine/shaft alignment and follow the tips on Matt Botos R/C Helicopter Site website with regards to this area.

Jamie, what's happened to your fleet??

It looks more like the fleet of an Align Fan Boy!!
              Happy Flying! Thanks - Dave

                ^^^^ He's got a point there Jamie!!

Back on topic though, although ive never had an issue with mine other than the auto hub, if your having issues with the start shaft and one way bearing in the clutch I would say you hav an alignment issue. Even though the shaft and bearing are oversized it does still require the alignment to be as true as possible for everything to work correcltly, if the alignment is out you will find that the bearing doesn't last very long before it gets chewed up, this is down to the stresses of the out of alignment shaft and the vibration of the engine.

Even though the adjustment on the N5 is very minimal there is very slight adjustment in the engine mount to get a smooth clutch stack and start shaft. Also check that you have the shims between the engine and the engine mounts if your running the OS55HZ.

                Hope this helps!
                Thanks!

Hahahaha! Until Synergy release a 550, it will be staying that way I just wasnt using the N5, and prefer the power to weight of the N9, so it seemed silly to keep it. The 550 is a great hack machine

If you try to spin the maingear does it spin freely or is the clutch grabbing alot, ie is your fan/engine turning when you spin the maingear?

If it is grabbing badly I can see how you could be damaging the shaft and bearing, as when you are trying to start the model you are putting too much load through the start system to overcome the friction between the clutch and clutch bell.

Mine didn't spin very freely at first, I followed the instructions on gluing the clutch liner in but it was abit tight, so I used some sandpaper to open the clearance abit, so that the maingear would spin more freely.

Many thanks for your opinions/suggestions guys. I would say there has always been a little bit of 'grabbyness' on turning the clutch bell, but put that down to a new liner. Despite having the N5 for 4months, it really hasn't flown much. Annoyingly views on RR, are that the OS55 needs those pesky engine mount shims, and can you get them at the mo? I managed to find one, but not the other (grrr).

I've also had quite a few issues starting due to a knackered starter, which has cause a few hydro locks, which may have been putting strain on the starter shaft - i'm guessing here really.

Still took the opportunity to take a look see in the engine, and there is a little rust in there, so will replace the rear bearing.

OS55 and engine mount shims on mine.

I've had mine much longer and done about 6 flights with it!

                          Stick with it Daz

I had the same problems - when I glued the liner in I used too much glue and the gap was too small so when I tries to start it the clutch grabbed and chewed up the bearing and start shaft.

Two weeks ago my N5 had been through 3 clutches and had only had 2 fights but with a new clutch liner fitted its had another 5 flights today and it flies great.
                          Cheers

FYI, removing the bearing from the clutch is impossible for mere mortals New clutch time.

Have you found the other shim??
I would'nt put it back with out it.
I usually mount engine and starter shaft a little more than finger tight
line everything up and give the starter shaft a few turns by hand then nip the
bolts up tight, check everything again, if its right it should run smooth no grabbing at all.
