Met up with a flying club mate at our local model shop yesterday, and,,
he convinced me my 3D standard of flying now requires (in his words)
    a decent heli
So, as there was no X50s in the shop, which was going to be my next heli,
    I bought an N5
Hope I've made the right decision.
    any build tips?
I will be following Jamiem's build blog if I can find it.

Quality of the N5 is stunning right up there...

Mines semi built, but just no time now to finish it off for a while

Not blowing my own trumpet but I was amazed at how basic(ish) and thin it was compared to the 600 in the airframe department.
Its also slightly longer as well.

          Bads on model
The fan shroud, I thought, was an absolute pig to remove but taking Jamiem's advice and put one side on first (which is what I thought I was doing) and its a breeze.

It can be difficult to put the screws in square after taking the back plate off but takes a little time.

Getting to the glow plug is a bit tight especially

          Goods on model
The removable servo tray is helpful

          Little parts count

Its belt drivern (which after flying TT and striping no end of gears, in my view is a smooth move)

It flys and tracks like a hot fork through butter. The canopy is easy to see as well with its double chin.

It flys brilliantly when its not even flying - just looking at it you know it will fly well

                Welcome to the N5 club!

This a great build thread to read along with Jamies.

                Justin's Synergy N5 FBL Build Log: August 6, 2010 - HeliFreak

A few things I found are on this thread, including the tail shaft star washer mod (I have a spare if you want one), and also gear mesh tips etc. The mod to the servo tray is good to keep your wiring tidy.

Enjoy the build, and ask away if you need to.

                Cheers Rob

I've got a back one if you need it, just replace when you get sorted. Actually and a front one. Just the standard ones though

You've made an excellent decision! The N5 is an awesome machine! The design is simple yet bullet proof with the chunky and quality made components!

I have not done many modifications to the build of my N5 but what i have done is change the tail slider lock washer as i did on my N9, also added bolts to the boom support ends as on the N9, these were M3 x 10mm dome head bolts.

The standard locking washer that comes with the kit (Both N5/N9) are not brilliant and therefore you have to epoxy/CA it once it is fitted to stop it coming off. What i have done on both my N9/N5 is change the locking washer for a better quality one. The replacement star locking washers i have used have a wider contact point on the locking pins so the washer has much more force on them so it is actually doing what it is supposed to do and dig into the brass bushing and the more it is forced to come off the more it digs in.

This is the type of (8mm) Star-Locking Washer i have been using:

You can get them from any fixing suppliers (Modelfixings.co.uk) or from the following online store:
                        Starlock Washers 718
If you are struggling let me know, I have a couple of spares so I could send you one over if you need it.

My only negative point on the N5 is the centre posts for the fan shroud, not a major problem but it would have been better if they were fixed in place to aid removal at a later date but other than that the way the fan shroud fit is excellent as you can fit it without having to twist and cut it to get it to fit or have to fit it round the engine first before mounting in the frames. You can get everything mounted and lined up and they fit the fan shroud last.
