  • N5 Fan Shroud

The N5 turned up (bought second-hand) and was dropping the engine in, and to be honest found the fan shroud mounting a little overcomplicated/fiddly so next time i take the engine out i'm drilling the frame spacers all the way through so i can fit a long bolt and nut...

Now if that's all i'm moaning about you did well Mr Botos!!

I have to agree, it is a little fiddley but I found that pre installing the centre posts first by locating them with a bolt though one side and then fitting the fan shroud of the opposite side, then securing with the bolts and doing the same on the other side much easier. The way the fan shrouds fit from the outside is excellent as you don't have to twist and squeeze them to get them into place but the centre posts could have done with been made with being into a block so they could have at least been built in and secured with something like a M2.5 bolt, then the fan shroud could have been fitted and removed more easily without having to hold the central spacers to stop them spinning.

When I removed the engine I loosen one side to crack the loctite, then retighten to hold the spacers in place then I loosen the bolts on the opposite side and remove them and then remove the bolts on the side previously loosened by holding the centre posts with my fingers.
    Thanks!

Yeah, i think the front servo tray could have incorporated the front shroud mount and the lower bearing block the rear shroud mount, could have been all injection moulded and relatively cheap.

But again not a major gripe just an OBSERVATION

It was my only major gripe on the heli build to be honest.
I have already suggested (I think to Roger) similar solutions that would make life easier there too - after all, building and maintaining is all part and parcel of the ownership experience, and besides that, it's really very good indeed!

Has anyone found that there is little to no clearance and that the clutch bell rubs on the top of the shroud? If so what did you do to overcome it. Either it's miss-shapen or I'm missing something

Edit: I was missing something, well sort of. The shroud sits on the carb inlet. Forcing it out of shape slightly. A little bit of fettling and it's sorted.

Is it a rubbing or a grabbing/clicking feeling?

If its a rub, have you any up and down play on the start shaft - there should be none as far as i'm aware. Also is the fan hub properly down on the crank shaft (hope i've got the terminology correct)?

If its a grabbing or clicking, then it could be the start start shaft/clutch stack mis-alignment, which you just need to adjust.

Cheers Daz, it was sitting on the carb throat, only slightly but it was pushing it up so forcing it out of line slightly. Cut a little off to give clearance and it sits fine now. Hate the cover though, a PITA to fit/remove. What were they thinking when they designed it.

With the larger carbs like the one fitted to the newer OS 55HZ series of engine you will have to relieve the opening in the fan shroud slightly as you have found, nothing a quick zip with the Dremel and sanding drum won't sort! Doesnt need much, couple of Mil if that!!

I have to agree with the central posts for the fan shroud, when I work on mine I usually remove one side first and this allows me to get in with a 4.5mm wrench to hold the central post as I break the loctite and remove the bolt. I usually use a small amount of blue loctite on these bolts or a low strength loctite like 222.
                Thanks!
