  • 1st auto

Engine quit on me today and had to do my first auto (my very first ever) and I have to say the N5 glides very gracefully so really pleased.

...really pleased I put on the Align skids also

the engine hasn't been running that well, there was fuel so i'm guessing it was some sort of flameout or something

It's very rare for an engine to just cut in flight, there's normally a good reason why. Check the mixture screws arent too far in, running too lean, check for blockages in fuel lines and filters, and also check that the pressure pipe isn't split from the exhaust or backplate if using a YS

Now get out and do some more, they are seriously addictive; you'll be doing aerobatic auto's before you know it!

On reflection I think I had leaned the engine too much. I had the engine setup on the raptor which does not have a cooling shrould like the N5, and I was leaning out based on engine temp.

caveat: this may be a complete red hering

as far as the auto, I was genuinely surprised how un-dramatic the whole procedure was - I guess I put that down to lots of sim practice autoing a Trex 500

Good work Darren. Now we both need to be brave enough to start doing autos on purpose. I bet it was a heart-stopping moment when the engine cut and the sudden realisation that it was a do or die moment!
