  • N5 Gear mesh

    Hi

How much play should there be between the main gear and the pinion.
At the moment the main gear spins approx 0.4 mm which still looks excessive, but moving the clutch stack
back to take up the play seems to to put too much stress on the moving parts and the crankshaft
doesn't look to be inline with the start shaft if that makes sense.

I removed the spaced between the engine tabs and the mount as
the engine looked to be too far out that way.

    Thanks

    Andy
    Cheers

    What engine are you using??

I'm running a YS 56 and I haven't needed the engine mount shims BUT
When I fitted the redline 53 I did

It's just a case of trying it,
There shouldn't be excessive backlash and you should be able to turn the start coupling with no restriction ,
That will tell you that your engine is lined up

      Hi Andy,

On my N5 i am using an OS55HZ and i have used the engine spacing shims that go between the engine and mounts, to mesh the main gear to pinion i left the engine mounts loose with the engine fitted and also left the clutch stack loose then cut a strip of paper, about 10mm wide and fed it in between the pinion and main get while pressing on the front of the clutch stach forcing it towards the lain gear making it good and tight. Tighten up all the bolts on the clutch stack then while spinning the started shaft with your fingers adjust the engine for a smooth feel to the start shaft and then tighen down all the engine mount frame bolts. Once this is all done remove the slip of paper and you should have a perfect gear mesh and a perfctly aligned clutch stack and engine.

I have used the 'Paper Meshing' method for years and it always works great for setting the gear mesh.

Let me know if you have any other questions and i'll try and help as much as i can.
      Thanks!

        Hi Guys

        Thanks for the responses

I'm using the OS55HZ too. I'll put the engine shims back on and try your method tomorrow Rossco. The fan sounds to be rubbing on the shroud so this might cure it.

        Thanks

On mine the bell rubbed on the shroud but I loosened the shroud and retightened and all was good. I used ROSSCOS alignment method as well.
