  • Balance issue

Try as i might, i can not get my N5 to balance. Up front I have an Arizona reg, 9ch rx, ATG & 1800mah lipo. Switch glow on the frame just behing the tail servo and spartan gyro in its intended posistion.

Balances perfectly without the canopy on but nose heavy with it. Tried adding weight at the back of the frames but as its so close to the C of G it makes little difference. Any ideas folks ???

Flys great but needs shed loads of rear elevator grrr..

A nose-heavy heli is the easiest thing to correct because you have the long tail boom to use to your advantage. There's no need to try to put a weight on the frames just a tiny weight out by the vertical fin will do the same job and add less overall weight to the heli.

(and no, it will not slow down the piro rate any more than the larger weight placed nearer the C of G, it takes the same energy to accelarate a 100gram mass to 1 mph as it does to accelarate a 10 gram mass to 10 mph etc., makes no difference in inertia whatsoever so long as the weight is in perportion to the distance away, if you see what I mean).

Half tank full of fuel, Ely q reg wont make any difference as its about the same weight as the arizona. I've now taken this off and it will balance with canopy on so I am thinking of running the ar7000r all in one.

Yep tried weight on the tail fin and only a small amount needed as said but I shouldn't have to mess around with bits of lead making the thing look untidy. Weight tolerance seems to be poor unlike every other heli & I've built pretty much all recent helis over the last couple of years.

Well the Ely.Q ultimate has the opposite problem, very tail heavy. I have a big 4500mah NiMh pack mounted on a plastic box as far forward as it can go and fit in the canopy and it's still tail heavy!

'Speaking of canopies. I was actually a bit surprised that a Raptor plastic canopy (for example) weighs over 200 grams. I had hardly ever considered the weight of the canopy before I actually weighed a few.

yep, suprising how much, the N5 canopy is thick and weighty because its big for a 50 size.

The N5 canopy is actually pretty thin compared to a lot of FG canopies.
As for balancing I've not actually bothered to check my N5 at the moment, it flies nice and tracks well though.
I've also got an arizona reg and switchglo upfront but I have a fat 3200 FP Rx pack on mine so if anything mine should be even more nose heavy than yours!

Is this without any trim ? would you mind checking, sounds like you have a similar setup to mine.

The AR7100r is definitely a nice unit to have. I have the 7100 on the N9 and the install is so tidy.

Also means you can get a bigger pack up front if needed.

Only problem is I'm running 620's on cyclics. I recon sticking 7.4v thru em and it'll be magic smoke time !

I've got a little bit of trim in but that was done in the wind so it's anybodies guess where it is now. TBH I dont spend an awfull lot of time hovering and triming the heli out to hover hands off. I just go out and thrash the thing so I'm not sure I would notice if it was out of balance by a bit.
I'll try and check balance tonight when I get in after work.

Cut down N9 boom will transfer some weight to the back.

I am sure Pete had a trim issue.. in the end is was the centre bell crank Assembly had moved, it also happened again, but that was the outside 'I' crank.. he forgot to grind a flat on both of the set screws..
