  • N5 - Weights and Setups

Thread to capture weights and setups.

It is interesting reading all the comments about how beefy the machine is but being quite light also!

Having started building mine it is easy to see the beefy side of the machine and why it is quite light also.

Firstly you have to use a smaller than normal throttle servo, no washers on the screws, small undercarriage, small looking tank (therefore less fuel to carry), tail gearbox is just some G10 plate, no torque tube and all the associated bearings/gears etc that go with it and a smallish Rx pack is reccommended also!!

So what does your N5 weigh and with what setup?

Just weighed my N5 all up RTF with Fuel, header tank full, 2200 rx lipo, and it came out at 4.3kg. Dont know how that compares, but it doesnt "feel" heavy in the air for sure. I could save a bit of weight from that by loosing the header and braiding.

How much does 485cc's of fuel weigh? And how much does the empty header weigh?

As a loose guide 1 ltr of light liquid generally weighs one kilo.

I would guess that as the fuel contains oil, which must be a bit heavier, we can safely assume that 485cc is 500g approx? so a dry weight of about 3.8kg sound about right?

Avgas has a specific gravity of 0.72. So 1 litre of Avgas weighs 720 grams.

All depends on the specific gravity

that is very true Tom water is 1000grms per ltr most fuels like petrol diesel are lighter than water. some oils are more heavy. so i would guess that nitro and meth are a lot lighter than water, but would imagine the oil in the fuel is a little more heavy. went with phil from revo tonight to maiden his N5, think i am gonna have to get 1.

specific gravity of methanol is .791, of nitromethane is 1.139. not sure the figures of Klotz or EDL so you do the math

I'm too discombobulated to give a damn but either 1. use the same fuel in each comparison or 2. use water H2O with a specific gravity of 1

Blimey, I'm getting flashbacks of A level Chemistry

FYI, a fat birds leg has a specific gravity of 10 to the power of 10 i.e 10,000,000,000 grams
