  • Synergy E7 One-way bearing

    Guys,

I just bought a secondhand Synergy E7 and the one way bearing appears to be in a bad way: it "grabs" the main gear occasionally when the head should spin freely. I've tried a little lube, but no improvement. I will check to see if there are any deformations on the sleeve, but am approaching the point or ordering a new bearing and sleeve at a rather eye-watering price. Can anyone recommend any other DIY fixes before I do this or even a cheaper suitable alternative item?

    cheers,

    Si G

    Hi Si

The bearing was very tight when first fitted, I talked to climbout and to several guys flying the E7 and was assured it would loosen after running in a bit. The airframe has had very little use and I had no problems with the one way in use.

Give climbout a call if your unsure.

    Cheers

Send an email to Matt Botos directly, he has fantastic customer service.

I told him the bearing had become notchy in my N5c swash, and with no hesitation he replaced it for me free of charge. Now I'm not saying that he will do the same for everyone, but it is worth asking for his advise and see where it leads to.

        By lube, don't use grease ! It's a light oil only , triflow is recommended , .......
strip the unit and check /clean the one way bearing .
check the brass bushes for installation damage , it's easy to bruise the bushes .
        hope this helps

          Hi Si,

The bearings can have a slight amount of friction when new but they do loosen up once they bed in after a few flights.

What lubrication are you using? The best lubrication to use is a light oil such as Tri-Flow or similar.

It might also be worth checking the bolt that goes through the tail drive gear and auto hub sleeve for over tightness, if it has been over tightened this can distort the sleeve and cause the symptoms you are experiencing. Check this as it might be worth replacing the sleeve if it has been distorted.

The one way assemblies are usually bullet proof so a couple of things I can recommend to try before ordering a replacement:

Check the sleeve for any score marks, these can cause the bearing to grab in some instances. The best way to rectify this is with some very fine wet/dry sandpaper and using some oil polish the surface of the sleeve to remove any score marks.

Also check the bronze bushings in either end of the one way assembly, these should be installed with red locktite and not loose in the one way housing.

Check the lubrication of the bearing itself, if there is grease in the bearing this causes the bearing to not function correctly. The best way to rectify this is to flush out the bearing with WD40 and then relube with Tri-Flow oil.

if I can help with this just let me know, i would be more than happy to take a look at the one way for you and see if I can get it sorted for you. Just give me a shout if I can help.

          Cheers,
          Ross

Many thanks all (Ronny P - no criticism of you intended, mate).

I've only been using light oil on the bearing (scorpion motor oil) but will check for scoring and distortion as you all suggest. I'm not too bothered as it doesn't affect the drive train when running but may reduce the available "float time" If I have a forced auto!

            many thanks all,

Not sure if this applies here or not, but I have heard funny things about the Scorpion oil.
Someone had trouble using it to lube a pitch slider & found it gummed up in cold weather.
Might be worth trying some other oil.

              Tim.
