• Shortening the motor shaft

Just before I mod my motor shaft on my 700mx, I guess this has to shortened to clear the lipos. I can't get away with not modifying it? Just thought I'd ask before I cut into a brand new motor.
Cheers,
Simon

I don't have a Goblin so I don't know the particulars of how much the shaft needs to be trimmed or what other space issues may be involved but one thought that comes to mind is that with my Rave ENV I got an ali plate that is about 3mm thick and has the proper holes for the pinion and motor bolts, it sets the motor just that little bit higher on the motor mount and thus the shaft is effectively slightly shorter.

The only reason I can think of that may not be workable on the Goblin is if the pulley has to fit right down on the motor shaft for strength reasons or if the shaft needs trimming by a lot more than 3-4mm.

DO NOT forget to keep a plastic bag over the motor tightly sealed while you are cutting the shaft.

Metal filings don't want to be finding a way into the magnets in the motor.;)

Wise words Tim

I'm just about to shorten my 700MX and would probably not put it in a bag to protect

Many thanks

Take the shaft out, takes 2 minutes. I have protected them well in the past then 1 day decided to look in the case afterwards just to check and sure enough there were fillings inside. Motor span fine and smooth with no evidence what so ever of bits inside.

Take the shaft out and do it without worry.

You dont need to do it on the Goblin but the shaft will poke through a gap in the CF tray and there is still plenty of room but if a lipo goes up against it in a crash it WILL puncture it, I didnt do it at first ;)

Managed to fit the motor to have a look at clearance. I have loads of space between the bottom of the shaft and the lipo pack, so I think I'm going to leave it as it is. If my Goblin hits the ground hard enough to move the pack that far up, I think a split lipo will be the least of my worries. The little carbon plate it not going to stop a 6s lipo smacking the pulley.

Depends what packs your using really, optis no chance of it hitting, my gens ace though could quite easily hit I think.

Interesting about protecting the motor - I didnt. Motor spins smooth and free etc as you say Ben. Heli flies lovely, and is lightning fast! Might pull it out and have a look.

P.s Did I mention these things are fast? Like, really ridiculous fast (Ive just been out)

Got 5000Mah Turnigy's and there is loads of space in there. Got the tray on its lowest setting as well, which helps.

Yeah ive got mine on its lowest setting too, but with my align 5200 (which are slightly puffed) i darent run them because they touch the carbon motor pulley guard and im worried itll rub through.

My non puffed gens ace sit literally 1.5-2mm from the carbon guard, and it makes removing them very difficult (you cant pull them "Up" off the velcro)

We might of been talking about different things here, i think itd be very easy for the cells to hit the guard - not so much the pulley. I think the guard is mainly there to protect the packs from the spinning motor pulley in the event of them coming loose or something in flight. Wouldnt take long for that to go through the pack sheathing if your flying inverted and cause a fire!

Those packs must be big then, or I'm missing something as I checked earlier and thought I had loads of space. Will look again later in the week when I have a chance to get back into my little room !!

Definitely place motor in a plastic bag & poke shaft through to protect the motor from metal fragments, did the cut on my 700MX using a dremel & all been ok so far ;)

I'm using the lowest battery tray hole. Manual says that's for packs up to 64mm high. Gens ace are 64mm high not including Velcro.

The majority vote seems to be to shorten the shaft. I'm not tempting fate, so will get mine sorted at the weekend. Will take a pic before though to show the clearance.
