  • Rave env with OS GT15HZ Petrol or nitro?

    Hi.
Has anyone tried to, or has fitted their rave with an OS GT15HZ Petrol engine. I only want to sport fly so don't need a nitro screaming its head off.
Just a thought at this stage or do you think nitro is better?

I think its a case of the petrol ones being much more fuel efficient and cheaper to run (30 minute flight times i think arent uncommon, and costs about 50p a tank)

They have significantly less power though to go with it.

If you think a nitro is screaming you're going to need ear defenders with a gasser. Horrible noise!

Yes I have read that there is less power from the OS GT15HZ Petrol, I suppose I'll need to to consider the weight as well. I think the rave is heavier than most 90's. However should be better in the wind and less likely to be blown about and as we seem to have abundance of wind it might be a good thing. What I would like to know is will I be stressing the engine too much, is there going to be a major amount of dremeling to the frames and fan shroud to get it in? Oh yes noise issue, what exhaust, there are 2 options??

+1 on the noise, and keep it in the shed like your strimmer, because they stink

Thanks for the info, slowly the enthusiasm is fading as the wife will certainly kick it outside as Hpi baja has been treated the same way. But there might be trouble ahead as I wouldn't want my heli to be kept outside. Nitro it might have to be. MMmm lots to consider.

From what I understand you probably want to get a recognised & developed setup, helis or heli conversion.
Unless you really know what you are doing.
The OS may be a better bet in a 600.

I can get 10 mins+ on my Raptor 90 per tank (similar size n weight to the rave) And trust me 10 mins will fry your brains. Also if you ran a lower headspeed it will be A: quieter, B: better on fuel but still have the grunt should you get a bit ham fisted with the collective

I have had three petrol helicopters and I find that actually they don't stink. After flying just let any fuel film evaporate, then if the breather line is closed off you will not smell petrol (unless you have a leak somewhere). ---- just remembered, I have had four petrol helis in total.

Or if you really want to make sure it never stinks you can use Aspen Alkalyte petrol which is supposed to be odorless. I wanted to try it but have not yet found a stockist close to me so I just use regular petrol.

Regarding the sound, well that's a personal taste thing. Mine have Zenoahs, so they run at lower rpm and two of them have the Century Torpedo pipes and I don't find the sound displeasing. I have now sold one (Robbe Futura SE with G23) but I still have a Century Predator SE with a 26cc Zenoah. The 26cc is a bit loud, it has quite a bark to it when it gets going. I have a theory about the sound difference, which may not be true but it's just a theory, it may be due to the combustion in the petrol engine being a shorter duration and it might have something to do with the fuel/air ratio being much lower with petrol. It is a different sound though and the .91/105/120 nitros do have a much more mellow sound.

Having said all that, there's nothing wrong with a .91 nitro and you have plenty of punch when you want it. It's just that if you only flew that one heli all the time the cost of fuel would add up. I'm always flying something else as well, usually electric, so I'm not as concerned about the fuel costs.

You can buy Aspen Alkylate online if you can't get it local, either straight (£17.95 5L) or a 1:50 synthetic mix (£18.16 5L) with min order and plus delivery.

Been meaning to try it for a while as there is a couple of stockists within 20 miles of me but not got round to it yet

Yeah it's the delivery cost that kills that idea unless you're buying a heck of a lot of it. So the only way it's viable is to find a local stockist
