  • Shakin' Stevens Rave Ballistic

Finally got my Ballistic into the air but it didn't last long. The whole heli is just shaking, it's fairly aggressive but did seem to hover. I found some lateral movement in the mainshaft which is mostly front to back so I'm thinking that's the issue. But I'm also miffed why it's just front to back. Should I be looking at anything else? VBar didn't show excessive vibes when I tested without blades but the number was about 450. I'm just using Express atm.

Short vid of flight but doesn't really show the shaking. I'd appreciate any guidance on this.

Blades too tight? Bump up rpm?

Yeah, 'can't tell anything from the vid as it's a long way away.

      The usual things are;
      1. If it seems to happen only at lower headspeeds it could just be the hardness of the dampers.

      2. Blade balance? Most of the time modern carbon blades are pretty well balanced but not always and if you have a mismatched pair, even of the exact same type of blade, then anything is possible.

I'll assume it's not the tracking as you would definitely notice if they were way out.

If it's not the blades or anything to do with the main rotor, shaft etc. then perhaps a TT that is bowing and making the boom vibrate?

I've been delibarating over this since the maiden. I've also been unwell so haven't done anything about it. I'm going to try and get rid of the lateral play in the shaft to start, then gease the feathering shaft and dampers. Hopefully this will sort it out.

Trillian, blade balancing is also on my list and I'll try a higher head speed. I had it set to 1764rpm.

I've got a Rave ENV that has the wobbles on a headspeed around 1750, I'm using Radix 690 Non FBL blades, either side of that headspeed it seems ok, but around 1750 seems to cause it problems.

Hi nick , sorry to hear you have been unwell :-(
the video doesn't help it's just too far away .......
Are the tail gear inserts in the tail tube fully home ( you have to push like heck to get them in )

Are the mechanics free if you spin it up with the pinion unmeshed ? Then try again without blades , but only at low rpm !!!

It's not advisable to grease dampers but hey try anything that will help.
i so wish you were nearer to me :-(

Did you do the anti boom strike mod ? If so just go stock .

Failing all this I can come over next weekend ( at Ne grassroots this week) or you are welcome to visit me and we will go fly at my club .

If all of the above fails , send it to me I will sort it. :-)

Is this a new build or conversion ? I have read a warning on here, something about changing head dampers on rave env but can't remember who or why ?

There is a mod to stop any chance, very unlikely , of a boom strike , IMO for mortals like me it's not required !

It it were head speed it would be a gentle nod , nick said its violent , heck I wish the video was better .

Well i'm back up and running so time to have a look at this again. I've been tinkering with the Gaui 200 the last two days completley opposite end of the scale! Rach thanks for the tips. I belive the tail is spot on and the mesh on the metal gears is good. Don't half make some noise when you spool it up in the kitchen Don, It's a new build. Steve, I'll try higher head speed. I did have the gov set for a higher setting but didn't think to try it at the time. I've been using this Rave Ballistic Ballistic FSO build - Page 1 - RunRyder RC Helicopter as a good reference for head speed as it's similar spec. Also covers some of the issues/tips covered in this thread.

I'm running Radix 710 v2 and Edge 105 SE, It has VBar silverline, Metal bearing holders, Next D Scorpion 520 Ultimate motor with TORQ 9180/9188. Build Thread here http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/rave-e...fso-build.html I'm going to add some more pics and full spec later to get it up to date.

Went out to the field today with the Ballistic to see what the results of my tweaks has done. All I can say is superb she now flys beautifully. What I did was 'thread lock' the shaft to the bearings using some super dooper anaerobic adhesive, run 1764 head speed, greased the feathering shaft and dampers with Super Lube and oh yes put grease in my thrust bearings while I had the head apart! Must have missed that trying to force the shaft through the dampers the first time.

It flys so brilliantly that I wish I had more than two set of lipos. That said I got 8 minutes from each set only putting 3100mAh back in.

Hey! Excellent :-) I was about to PM you actually, to see how you got on and what was the cause of the shaking.

I wasn't able to fly last weekend due to not being quite ready on Saturday and then the weather being ridiculose on Sunday but I did a quick test in the back garden with the ENV, just got it into a hover and I really just wanted to make sure the motor and ESC work and everything is doing what it should. Sooooo, this weekend I'll get it in the air properly.
