  • Ballistic maiden take two...

After Saturdays failed attempt at a maiden I finally got the chance to try again today. Bit nervous and think I lost a couple of pints of fluid in this heat ( I'm not good at heat at the best of times ) but I'm pleased to report everything went well this time

I've set it up with 14deg pitch and running on 50% on the Jive which I think is around 1700rpm maybe.

Compared to the 700e I had before it feels lighter but much more stable. I know it has to be significantly lighter than my 700e setup but surprised how you can feel it so much in flight. I have to say I know where it's Ballistic name comes from, blimey it's quick, scared the crap out of me. The 700e was never as quick as this thing. At the same time a lazy flip seems much slower and effortless which I guess is the lower weight showing again.

Really liking it, and I think a 4min flight has used 50% of my 4000mah packs.

I'm thinking I might need to get the Rave 450 built as well and see if that feels nicer than my trex500

It does indeed. Moral of the story. Never rush a tail setup. Lol

Good to hear all is well this time round. The Ballistic can be very graceful and smooth or quite aggressive just as easily. Just keep an eye on the temps of the ESC and motor. (although, if you have a Scorpion motor they do tend to run a bit hotter than some others). The ESC should be just warm.

At the gearing and headspeeds on mine at the moment it is using about 2300mah over 6 minutes. So 8 minutes should be possible on 4000mah packs (I was flying 7 minutes on Saturday but haven't charged those packs yet). That's at a bit higher throttle but a lower KV motor so I'm not sure what happens to the power being drawn at lower throttle if you're not pushing it into bogging.

I think I'm using significantly more out of the packs than you then if the tester is correct and I've taken 50% out of them at 4 mins. Interesting, will check later as well.

Yeah, I'll charge the packs I flew on Saturday and see what it looks like. The Kosmik logs all that stuff as well but the acid test is what the charger puts back. I flew the Opti 3500 packs the week before for 6.20 and put back 2350mah. I think on Saturday I only flew the bigger packs, Haiyin 4000s and Turnigy 5000s so we'll see what goes back in those (maybe I did fly the 3500s again I don't remember!). I find that what the tester shows right after a flight is a bit erratic but it's OK as a rough guide.

--Just a thought, at 50% throttle on the Jive you're probably closer to 1800 headspeed with your motor. Where I have my idle-1 right now gets right around 1600, if memory serves it was between 1550 and 1580 in the logs, something like that. I'll look at them again after I charge one of these packs.

I'll be charging the packs tonight so I can fly again tomorrow lunch so will have better numbers then. One of my sets of packs was just hovering to check everything was ok and get the tracking spot on. The second set was timed at 4mins and was a few circuits, couple of loops ( which really will take some getting used to with lower weight ) and some flips.

I think I need to start a big clearout of stuff now and get some more lipos, 2 sets wont be enough

Just finished charging the packs I flew rather than hovered. 50% dead on used pretty much.

So I should be able to get about 6mins of flight time with my current usage.

According to MrMels I get 1891 at 55% and I was running at 50%. No idea how you work out the percentage to rpm on a kontronik, it's easier on something like the castle where you give it a head speed.

Yeah Mr Mels is pretty accurate on headspeed from 55-60% on up but I think the reason it doesn't show lower percentages is that from my understanding it is not as linear in the lower ranges. So you'd have to get someone to tacho it to really know for sure.

So what was the mah figure that was put back in? Must be like 2500mah if it's 50%, so yeah it's burning more power in 4 minutes than mine is at 6 minutes. (last flights used around 2100mah in just over 6 minutes based on two pairs of the packs I used)

---Doh! If you're using 4000mah packs then 50% is 2000mah If that's in 4 minutes then it is roughly 40% more power drawn per minute (maths are not my best subject! )

Yeah near enough 2000mah used in 4 minutes. 40% more does sound a reasonable amount, although I guess I'm running a higher head speed than you are so not surprising I guess.

Yeah I'm sure most of that power is due to the higher headspeed and maybe a small percentage is the lower efficiency of the motor / ESC at a low throttle but I'm not sure so much about the efficiency part.
