  • Outrage 550 motors

A quick summary on my experience with motors I have tried on the Outage 550 on 8s. Packs are 2x Hyperion 4200 4s, which require some frame stretching.

    Scorpion 4025-1100
    Scorpion HK 4025 Series Motors

    X-Era 4030 2Y (Kv 700)
    Xera 4030 Series Motors

    Neu 1907H/1.5Y

    Scorpion 4025-1100:
    325g

In most places it's listed as a 6s motor, although on other sites it says "8s".
Maybe it's the most powerful motor, unfortunately also very very inefficient.
The Kv rating is more or less OK, since the smallest possible pinion (10t) gave a too low headspeed for my taste. That pinion also broke quite soon, and I'm not planning to try any more 10 tooth pinions on a 5 mm shaft. The walls are simply too thin. I think I used 11 or even 12 teeth most of the time.
The motor gets so hot that you can't keep your hand on it for a longer time. Also the ESC (Kontronik Jive 80 HV with cooling fins) gets quite hot. With continuous tictocs you can cause an ESC shutdown from overheating.
Due to the high Kv, it is able to maintain headspeed and power until the Jive shuts off at 3.0 V (which isn't very LiPo friendly, timer recommended).
Flight time, well below 5 min (if I remember correctly).
Mounting the motor requires an adapter, which is sold separately.

    X-Era 4030 2Y
    430 g

This was a leftover from my 700E. It's a 10s motor rated at 3.1 kW. Putting it into the 550 was a kind of crazy Frankenstein experiment.
To my surprise, it works very well and I flew it for several months.
The only disadvantage is obvious: As a 600 / 700 motor it is wayyy too heavy. However, for my style of flying this doesn't matter. I'm not too keen on abrupt 3D moves, but prefer smooth moves. And in those (loops, funnels etc), the 4030 keeps an iron fist on headspeed. It pushes out as much power as the LiPo can deliver, and that is clearly the bottleneck. Otherwise, the 550 feels much more like the 700 without the visibility.
Since the motor is oversized, it runs very very efficiently. I can do tictocs for a minute (they are a bit forced, since the heli is too heavy), and motor and ESC get only a bit warm. In normal flying, the motor is slightly above ambient temperature, and the ESC stays cold.
Since the Kv is rather low, headspeed drops at the end of the pack.
Recommended pinion: 17 teeth. I should try it with 18 or 19, if I can find any.
Flight time: 5..6 min. Hovering at eye height with reduced headspeed: 9+ min
A heavy-handed drag-racing start knocks out a tooth from the main gear (tried it twice - two teeth missing)

    Neu 1907 1.5Y
    280 g
I started flying this one only today. It's probably the most "common sense" motor in this list.
Coming from the X-Era, the heli felt quite a bit lighter, since weight drops by 150 grams. The heli gets better at tic-tocs, but loses the "authority" to fly straight lines like an arrow. Also this one is very efficient - the motor gets warm, the ESC stays cold.
Right now I'm using a 13 tooth pinion on the 1907.
A pinion puller is recommended, since as an inrunner you can't twist a pinion to get it off.
It has 4mm mounting holes, and one out of eight stripped for no apparent reason.
It can be used with the 550-kit supplied motor support bearing.
The screws that come with a T-Rex 600 feathering shaft have the right length.
I set the Jive to +10 degrees timing for this motor to get more power.

    And which one is best?
    It depends:
Maximum power, flight time doesn't matter - Scorpion.
F3Cish / a "heavy" heli: If I take the 550 as a spare heli to F3C events next year, I'll put back the X-Era motor.
    3D / a "light" heli: The Neu.

The NEU motor casings are made of very soft aluminium and thread strips aren't uncommon.

And, a short comparison of packs, using the Neu motor.

      Hyperion 2x 4200 4s pack: A typical flight time is 5..6 min.
Hyperion 2x 3300 2x4s pack: Flight time about 4 min (1 min tictocs, rest aggressive "sports" flying).

3300 is much lighter, of course. Regarding power and climb rate, it's about the same. But the 4200 packs are quite worn, whereas the 3300 pack is brand new.

      Which one is better?
I'd go for 4200, the extra minute is more valuable to me (and I don't have any problems with heavy helis).
Though, maybe I'll get addicted to the lighter heli and change my mind.
