  • Outrage 550, how good?

Concidering a change to my fleet plans, was going to get a velocity nitro but am enjoying my vision so much i don't really want to part with it, so instead i was thinking of maybe getting a bigger electric again and after seeing one of these the weekend really took my interest.
It would mean the departing of my trex 700 to be able to buy some batteries but am loving my aurora so much that would not bother me to much so just wanted to know what the owners of these machines thin of them.

for me it's the best flying heli in my fleet and the main reason why I am really looking forward to the Velocity 50 turning up.

The characteristics of the machine (and of course it depends on what you spec it with) are lots of power, razor sharp fast and accurate cyclics. They don't fly anything like an Align heli, everything about them is crisp, fast and accurate. They also feel very light in the air, which makes certain moves seem easier (like four point tic tocs).

With the recent release of the new belt & new front pulley the only issues the machine had are now resolved.

Cheers Ash, will the current kits have the updated bits in?

Personally, I prefer my T-Rex 600e but it has many hundreds of £££'s worth of upgrades to get it to fly properly.

If you want a 30 sized heli then the 550 delivers outstanding accuracy and it's also belt drive so you have no worries about slight tail dings if you are flying a bit low . The build quality is also rather good, it feels like the right materials have been chosen for their individual jobs.

If my T-Rex wasn't modified so heavily I'd prefer have one of these (stretched to 50 size).

the new kits do have the updated parts in them. If they don't then the front pulley is a free upgrade to old kit owners anyway. The belt is not a free upgrade but I'd recommend getting it (Bando 630XL belt).

Cheers guys, think it is a toss up between one of these and a 500 rex but will have to sell the 700 first

500 rex will be cheaper to crash than a 30 size, but the 550 will undoubtedly handle wind better. conversely the packs will cost loads more for the 550. swings and roundabouts mate I love my 500, brilliant for just plug in and fly fun, i also loved the old 600e i had (although for what i do now the 6s config would have just fried in no time at all). id guess it depends on budget really

It will be the sell of my 700 that will fund it so will have a good budget, 500 ESP is also on the list but the 550 just looks the nuts

the parts for an Outrage 550 are same price or cheaper than an Align 500 (and yes you do get two of stuff in a packet like align ). The only bigger costs are the power system and blades.

Where can I find more info on the updated pulleys? I already changed the bearing in one, but it still wobbles a bit, compared to the other one.

Well have ordered the cf kit now.
Next thing i need to know is the power system.
What is a good esc and motor combo for 3d flight?
Also do people run a seperate bec and rx lipo? was planing not to but would like some input please

power I'd just stick to 6S, it doesn't need anymore than that. 6S 5000 works fine.
Motors I'd go with the Scorpion 4020-1390kv.

ESC ...... mine field. Choices are Hobbywing Platinum 6S 100A or HV 70A. Some people have had them fry on them though. Castle HV85, just recently had one fry on me. Alternatively you can go the expensive route and fit a Jive 80A.

I run mine on an AR7100 and 8V, so just plug in an rx lipo pack. I've also run it from a Hercules BEC which also works fine. Depends what weight savings you want to make.

                          >> Jive 80A.
which comes with an ESC, so I don't need the heavy battery (and possibly regulator) anymore. I think I can manage with 6 V.
I just picked mine up from the post office today (80 HV for 8s) , I haven't tested it.

BTW, quite a number of 550 kits were shipped with double damper spacers instead of thrust washers for the main blade grips ... I learned this the hard way. Look out...

Just to add more "fire" to the equation A mate has recently had 2 Jives fry on him and Kontroniks were apparently less than helpful
