  • Protos 450 !

Just been talking to Matt at Midland heli's and he has told me they now have the Protos 450 in stock, hmmmm I thought so i went to the website to check it out. having looked at the manual I see that the main gear and tail is driven by the same belt using tensioners.
Im not keen can anybody tell me differently please as i prefer torque drives as Ive had various problems with tail belts on 500's and 250's etc let alone having a belt drive off the motor !

It is how MSH have always done it (with their Protos 500).
It means less gear noise too, so it runs quieter.
I'm sure it will work very well. I've flown the Protos 500 and it was ballistic.
They take special care to ground the boom as well, so static buildup can be avoided.

    Cheers,

I've read that belt drive is more efficient than gears -whether that's actually true though is another matter! I would have thought you should also get less vibration from the drive train.

is this thing 3s with 325mm blades?

i.e have they missed the boat when "450's" should be 350mm and 5/6s?

        cheers

          hi

yep it has 325 blades but you can run it on 3/4 cell lipos.

i won't waste the bandwidth to get the manual if it's not 350mm blades :-)

i had a look on the website today and only seen a mention of 325's so i assumed that was the max-very happy to be wrong here....350's are the future.

                cheers

Text books normally state that spur gears have an efficiency of 98 - 99%, hering bone gears (like logo) have 96 - 98% efficency and belts have approx. 96 - 98% efficiency so there really is not a lot of difference.

Belts generally do have lower vibration transmission characteristics than TT due to higher damping characteristics, so it will not transmit such large vibes from the tail for example.
However a belt does have a tendency to create a certain amount of vibration. It will tend to vibrate laterally (ever watched a belt on a car) due to it going from (theoretically) zero accelleration to some finite centripetal acceleration, when it switches direction (i.e. whenever it passes over a roller).
However I guess you could also argue that a TT generates vibration due to the fact that they are rarely totally straight.

Protos do a stretch kit for there 500 (converts from 425mm to 470mm baldes)

MSHeli Srl Helicopter Model Company Homepage

If the 450 is setup to be able to run of 4S there is always a possibility they will release a stretch kit in the future.

I look forward to hearing more on this heli - it would be good to have another option other than the 450 pro. Will have to see how it flies and what the spares prices are like
