  • Protos Finally gets to fly.

I finally got my Protos in the air tonight, after a long wait for gear and then being ill for a while, I managed to finish it today and nip out to the polo fields to give it a go.

This is a very nice little heli and so far knocks spots off the Trex 500, though I am still in the set up and tweeking stage, I really do like it and can't wait to get some flights on it.

Will post images when I get some time,

I heard from good authority that the protos is a good 300g lighter than the trex 500 so power to weight it will knock socks off the trex as motors are pretty much the same!, build is fantastic with no slop the noise it makes is beautiful, A bad point would be the plastic canopy. Ill be getting one of these shortly !!

Like Andy said, it's loads lighter and the quality of the parts is excellent - though isn't it a glass canopy, a very thin one? Being a new model it needs a little time spent on the build getting everything to move freely but nice build and very nice layout.

I'm not really very good at reviewing but I'll try - In flight it feels very light and masses of power from stock motor that looks and feels very similar to a Hacker A30, the cyclics very fast and smooth.

One thing I hate about the 500 is the noise - the Protos has the one way in the motor pinion then one belt going from the pinion to the main gear then to the tail rotor - this seems to make everything very quite and smooth.

Most models are crap with their stock plastic tail blades but the ones that come with this kit make the worst of them look good, they are really terrible and the performance of the tail reflects this, I gave my spare CF set to Martin but will change them as soon before I fly it next.

              Thomas

What ESC is supplied or do you have to buy one separately?

              Cheers

No ESC comes with the kit, I'm using a Jeti Spin 55 - and the pack is an Align 2500 6S lipo from my 500.

I must also point out that I've been told that this heli suffers from the same static issues as the Trex, Andy from RR said to run an earth from the boom to the motor mount - as far as I know they are changing the plastic on the boom clamp to the same as the frames which contains carbon so should solve the problem.

I earthed my boom to the motor mount and applied Graphit 33 to the outside of the belt, no static issues to date.

I started off with an Evolite 6S 2500 pack and performance on this is sprightly to say the least, the heli really does feel light in the air. I recently bought one of the new TP Extreme 2600 6S packs and this holds it's voltage better than the Evolite, headspeed is higher throughout the flight and it lands barely warm, this is with a headspeed around 2700rpm.

Contrary to popular choice I'm using the Align 60A ESC from the Trex 500, this also lands barely warm and is coping well. I'm only running HS82mg's and they are doing a good job on cyclic, it doesn't feel at all slow and they made more sense to me than 5245's at £30 each I'm using a CSM 720 gyro with a 3500g tail servo, it's at stock settings so far but I had a review of the Protos by Russ Deakin which gives some revised settings that he used so this will be the starting point next time out.
