  • Anyone had or has got one?

Just having a nose round the not so popular heli's as you do and just wondered if anyone has had or got a protos max 700/800? Was thinking about getting one if I'm honest, just wondered how they flew compared to my 600sx or the align's. I use the BRAIN on all my heli's and love it, so I'm guessing that the protos is kinda built around that and that it's very similar to the logo or dare I say it goblin? Go to admit it looks a very long bird, with a CF frame set, not to sure how it would fare when she went in?. Parts on FL look competitively priced, so not bad at all. What are your thoughts?

I have one. I have it configured as an 800. I am not sure why it is not so popular. I think people were expecting a feather weight 700 from Protos. What they actually came out with is much better suited as an 800. The way it works out is as a heavy 700, or a light 800. So obviously i went with an 800 set up. But i think this put a lot of people off. Guess it is not cheap either. But i have to say it is a beautiful machine. It is an incredibly simple design and the single belt transmission makes power so instant. I like the fact that it is a lesser known model.

Not sure why you think it is similar to a Goblin?!?!?

I was a bit worried about going for it as an 800 because i demand a lot of agility from my set up. I worried it might be a big slow pig. But it is so lively even as an 800. It flys like a much lighter helicopter. I am still experimenting with head speeds but it is difficult because it is so nice to fly at any rpm. Obviously different ranges bring out different characteristics of the heli.

In terms of how it crashes…. i couldn't tell you. I have only crashed 2 times in my 3 years in the hobby so i don't buy helicopters with crash costs in mind to be honest

It is an amazing machine. Get one

I was comparing the power to a goblin, had a look at some vids of the test pilot putting it through some good flights, I'm more impressed with you only crashing twice in 3 years, wow teach me OBIE 1 KANOBI [emoji23][emoji576]

Yes, i do see what you mean in terms of power… it is certainly meant to be smacked like a Goblin. But is equally as graceful during lower HS flying.

I have been flying today and found the sweet spot for me is 1950. It is incredibly crisp and responsive. The power and pop in the collective is insane!!! Even running identical pitch as my G4 it is definitely snappier.

I love this thing i have to say. Took a few flights to find out how i like it, as i am totally new to the 800 size in terms of disc loading and power consumption so it has taken some tweaking. But it is brilliant and i have got that can't wait to fly it feeling which is always a good sign.

In terms of me not crashing much…. what can i say…. lots and lots of sim time. I never attempt it in real life unless i can do it routinely and easily on the sim…… Plus…. i guess i just know where the ground is… and i don't really want to meet it so i work hard not to. Which is pretty good considering i like to fly low . Obviously i have crashed micros many many times. But, to this day, only 2 times with larger size machines……. (Touches wood) I am not saying i will never crash… of course i will. I just don't seem to make a habit of it. I fly a hell of lot too so I'm always well practiced.

Yeah I considered getting one of these but in the end their were a few things that put me off.

Firstly, pricing. The Mini Protos and Protos 500 (both of which I own/owned) are very reasonably priced and comparable to the pricing of an align kit, so why has MSH come out with such an expensive 700?

Secondly, customer service. I had a few problems with my protos 500 (belt broke on second flight - Faulty belt... - HeliFreak) and after countless emails/phone calls I never heard a peep on the matter. In the end I had to stomach the cost but if you buy MSH be prepared for zero customer service. Nothing like what you might be used to with Mikado.

I've also heard that the belt lasts at max 40 flights, and having owned protos machines before I know it's a bit of a pain having to keep changing.

Also on initial release there where loads of packing issues with the kits (one blade grip/smashed canopies etc) - although this is only a minor gripe i still find it unacceptable.

I've not flown one but having flown both of its smaller brothers I bet it is a dream to fly.

Pj it's up to you but I would say it's not the best heli for you at the moment and you'd probably be better off with something that has cheaper parts and good availability (in my experience you sometimes have to wait a while for protos parts). FWIW i've just got a trex 700 kit to play with - it's clear they fly very well, aren't expensive and parts are plentiful and affordable - or just wait for the 690sx.

I hear what your saying Phil, run before you can walk springs to mind lol. I've always been the same. I actually told the guys at the field if I buy anymore helis to punch me in the face. You flew really well at GR mate, nice and smooth and gave me a lot of determination. The 690 is on order, but I need to progress a lot more I think. It's so frustrating lol

You have certainly "heard" a lot Phil Have you actually seen or flown one?

I have well over 40 flights on mine now mate…… no sign … absolutely no sign of any belt degradation. The belt takes no time at all to remove. Very very quick indeed. The one sided tail makes it very easy to mess with the belt. But i can assure you…… the belts last a hell of a lot longer than 40 flights lol….

There was nothing wrong with my kit at all. Very pleased with its presentation and packaging (not that i care about that)

Also customer service is not an issue because the machine just works I can't think of any reason or point to getting in touch with the manufacturer when it is a flawless machine

Despite what those with zero experience with them might say…. they are brilliant machines. Simple as

(seriously mate….. belts last 40 flights??????) simply not true. Don't believe everything you read on Helifreak

Lol don't take it the wrong way pal. Obviously I don't believe everything read on forums but multiple users reporting the same thing is a fair indicator.

All I'm saying is that probably isn't the right machine for PJ, who has only been flying 7 months.

And no not everyones has 'just worked'. Customer service matters and ultimately that is why I haven't got one - I had a bad experience 'simple as'. They're not exactly flying off the shelves so I can't be the only one who isn't convinced.

Saying all this i'm sure it is a great machine and would love to have a go. I might wait for the kit price to drop a little and for some long term feedback.

                      Enjoy

Well i will certainly gladly keep you informed on how it is progressing

Funnily enough the MSH kit is the ONLY kit i have ever had the HAS NOT had a problem…. i must be lucky But… that would never put me off buying certain brands of helicopter. Because in my experience the majority of helicopter kits have some form of issue or other not a big deal at all. I have never had to talk to any customer service people either so not something that bothers me.

Can you please link to all these "multiple" users saying their belts only last 40 flights please??? …. I would love to read them (and not just the one bloke on Helifreak either)

Plus…. i am not taking anything the wrong way…. I do not like people offering advice on things they have no experience with…. thats all I have a working model that is amazing that i have experience with.

I will certainly keep an eye on my belt and check it for wear. But i have a lot of flights on it now and it looks brand new. Plus i fly pretty hard at 1950. The cases on Helifreak talk about the belt slipping. I think this is what is causing the degradation of the belts in those cases.
