Whiplash 90 Nitro - Rebuilt.

After buying the Whiplash second hand several months ago I have finally got it all sorted.

I ended up completely stripping the helicopter down right down to the last nut and bolt and have systematically rebuilt it and replaced anything that needed doing.

Looks like it had had quite a hard life previously so have many parts have been changed out either for cosmetic reasons or just to be safe.

Problem here being that several parts had to be sourced from over seas which of course delays things and in the end it turned out to be a bit of an expensive way to get my hands on one of these helicopters

looks like your biggest expense was in MinAir cable clips .
I thought they'd solved th supply issues over here with these latest models..obviosuly not so. A shame for such classy machines - why I don't like to risk my SpectraG - just too much hassle on parts

Midlands and Fastlads keep stock of parts but at the time I had to get the bits I wanted from Ron Lund in the US.

I'm thinking the same with my SpectraG but when I find time to mess around with changing a throttle servo I'll get back to flying it.

looks awesome and a very tidy build! So how does the plumbing work, I see that red anodized part on the side frames but cant work out what its for, something to do with the backplate pressure pipe?

The red fitting is a chassis mounted 'bung' for the tank pressure release.On my 700N I had been using the usual alloy type that you just shove in the end.

Had it some time and I'm pretty sure it didn't come from anywhere in the UK.
They are available in three colours on some of the Far East sites but can't remember which one I used - sorry.

I have 3 90 size helis and 2 50s in my fleet. All three 90s are Xcells. Not the most modern models, but still way more capable than I am, and they never wear out.

If I break one, I have plenty of spares to fly in the mean time while I source spares!

Trouble is, I hardly fly at all any more, so they all just hang up in the workshop collecting dust.

Please let us know how the Whippie performs.

Great!

Maidened the Whiplash earlier,did the usual preflight checks and then had precisely 2 1/2 minutes flying time before she went in.

Total electrical failure to the V Bar unit by the looks of it as the regulator was lit up but no power to any or the servos.So went in while hovering about 10 feet up in fail safe mode with the throttle shut down and no control of it at all.

Canopy was off so no damage to that but loads of other bits and have ended up denting my Hatori pipe - which I'm not happy about.

No servo power still when I have just looked at it on the bench but after moving the plugs very slightly sideways on the output of the regulator all has come to life - not really what you want.

All now works and all the connections looked secure and OK.Now have an issue where I know something is not right and will need to do some further tests to see if I can get it to fail again - on the bench.

Lets hope also that when I strip the helicopter down to check the damage that I can get all the spare parts.Looks like the usual though with main blades,tail blades and boom but also all 4 of the tail drive gears destroyed.

That's a shame after you went to all that tidy bother - as opposed to my slap it together and see if it flies a approach - and maidening before before tidying up.
Was that a new reg or the one with the 2nd hand bits?
New blades or the sort of cheapos I chuck on first (I learned that the hard way destroying a set of new Scott Grey's on a post repair maiden)?

The Scott Grey regulator came off the T Rex 700 but it was pretty much new with probably a dozen flights on it.

This is the second one of these I've had and was sent out as a replacement for one that failed with more or less the same problem.Total power loss to the cyclic servos only though.

Brand new blades.
