  • mCPX brushless questions

    Hello all

I know there are lots of posts regarding converting the mCPX to brushless but i am going to go off on a different tangent here and my questions are as follows:

    1) Being as i have no intention of doing 3D or that sort of flying can i just upgrade the main motor to brushless and not the tail motor.

    2) Is there a simple solderless system available where i can just plug in the wires and fix in the main motor, last year i did a brushless motor modification on a Honeybee V2 by soldering the 4 in 1 but my eyesight is not as good now.

    3) If there is a brushless main motor kit where can i get one from.

The reason i ask is because i was thinking that a brushless motor will have a longer life than a brushed motor and i may get better flight times.

I'm not entirely convinced its worth it for what you want... But that said I did get fed up of replacing main motors so often. I went through 3 before going brushless.

If you do decide to do it, this fits the bill nicely - more or less plug and play as far as I can tell. Taking feed from the motor port does reduce linearity but not a problem if you fly in a flat curve anyway as I'm sure most do.

I would lose the servo style connector and just direct solder the motor wires - its just unnecessary weight really. I'd also change connectors, but that depends on your battery choice.

Motor wise, the C05M fits your requirements - its a little more powerful than stock, but not immensely so. Very smooth and easy flying, works fine with stock tail (though I would recommend the latest style tail blade and an extended boom). Very light, motor + ESC should weigh less than the big dc brushed motor it replaces.

This guy is a pleasure to deal with and you can pick up a spare 8T pinion (and maybe some other stuff!) while you're there. Astroid Designs — C05M 11,500 KV short 1mm shaft Brushless Motor

Just be very careful fitting the pinion as its easy to bend the shaft. Maybe even ask Dylan nicely if he can fit it for you before sending.

Battery wise, best choice in terms of weight/capacity balance would probably be some of the 300mah type batteries out there - it's worth getting good ones though in my experience! Connectors will make a difference here too, the micro deans has 1/10th the voltage drop across it as compared to the stock rubbish! Again, not necessary but I would recommend you consider it.

      Hello Zeeflyboy

I have an mCPX version 2 and i use 300mAh 30C lipo's so i guess i have enough power but i was just thinking that if i fitted a brushless main motor it would last a lot longer than stock.

Well go for it if you're itching for something to do lol...

It will be an improvement over stock. Will last a lot longer too, but of course for the cost of the conversion you could buy several brushed replacements. The thing I found most annoying was the slow death where they would get worse and worse, that won't happen with a conversion like this.

how do you tell if the stock motor is on its way out?

Mine always just started losing power, then one started grinding and making an awful racket.

The other two would didn't grind but towards the end started making the heli randomly fall out of the air as if it had just fainted. I guess due to current spikes that kicked in the over current protection on the board... Would also kick the tail a lot. Replacing the motor fixed the problem each time.

I wonder if it is because they are only small motors and as the brushes are smaller it is not long before the brushes are worn down to the commutator and then its metal on metal, i am also sure the heat that is created does not help with the life of the brushed motor.

I understand that the brushless motor may cost maybe the same as 3 or 4 main motors but i may only have to fit a brushless motor once.

So if i was to go for the http://www.fast-lad.co.uk/store/brus...a-p-17857.html would the C05M motor fit with this.

So to sum all this up i would need the http://www.fast-lad.co.uk/store/brus...a-p-17857.html and a C05M motor fitted with an 8T pinion, i do not need rapid power from my mCPX all i want it to do is serve me well for the foreseeable future.

Correct, as I say be careful fitting the pinion - those 1mm shafts are really easy to bend. Also pick up some small heatshrink (2-3mm should work I would guess) to cover the solder joins where you solder on the motor... That's all you would need.

Best to use a vice to fit it, or ask Dylan to do it - I'm sure he'd help.

Edit - actually just saw that Dylan fits the pinions for free... In the description up the top

I have just had a thought being as i will be fitting a Microheli frame i forgot to ask if the C05M motor will fit the Microheli carbon frame or are the bolts to big etc etc.

Also how long does it take for Dylans motors to arrive in the UK on average as i see his site says 21 days or more

Yeah fits no problem. Usually 5 working days for stuff from him in my experience.

You can get the full kit here Hawk RC - Helicopter Spares | Midland Helicopters Ltd I would'nt get the tailboom with motor it sucks plug and play too.
