  • Gonna Hover This Damm thing, even if it kills me!

Not quite sure what my neighbours must think but my nightly routine seems to have become sitting in my bedroom with my back to the window staring intently at my bed for an hour or so.

Spent the last couple of days willing my MCPX to hang motionless above a table mat on the my bed, seems like such a simple thing to do. Slowly making progress and gone from endlessly chasing the heli around in an ever more erratic and widening circle whilst shouting at it to stay still, to a much slower almost controlled wander across my bed with only occasional mumbled curses. Actually managed to get it to stand still for a little while today. I can feel that the elusive hover is not far off and then I can move onto 2 table mats and trying to move from one to the other.

Only flown an MSR before so this is what I consider my first really heli and it's fantastic for learning on, dread to think what I would of spent in spare parts if I'd bought a 400 size heli instead of this. Plus I get to practise every night regardless of the weather.

Has anyone else adopted any peculiar night time habits as a result of an MCPX under the Christmas tree or is it just me?

I watched a couple of guys from the local club flying just before Christmas, hovering motionless, nose in and inverted in a slight gusting wind about 2 feet up. Even more impressed by the skill required to fly like that compared to the effort of hovering above a table mat on my bed!

Sounds like you're doing better than me I'm still trying to get the b1@@9y thing off the deck; I've been 'playing' with these contrary creatures for nearly a year now as well.

Got a DX6i at the same time as the heli so been playing around with it, currently have the Air/Elev set at 60% and 25% and the rudder at 75% and 10%.

Also played with the pitch and throttle curves as I find adjusting the height something of a challenge it's either sat at one height, or shooting towards the floor or ceiling so I'm trying to find a setting thats a little smoother to compensate for my lack of thumb control but I'm still struggling to make it sit at the height I want it at. currently got the throttle at 0.0/60.5/70.0/70.0/70.0 and the pitch at 30/50/64/74/100

I continue tweaking them all from time to time but honestly not sure if it the settings that are making a huge difference of my skills that are improving, probably a bit of both.

There's only a small difference from where you are to being able to do it. What you are trying to do is rewire your brain. It takes time. The older you are the longer it takes. You don't have to practice every day. Your brain will change and you will become as mad as the rest of us.
Unfortunately although you will feel really plaesed with yourself when you can hover, or whatever else your target is, it won't last long. Soon you will find something else that you can almost do, and so it goes on. For some reason spending money gets easier, the better you get. Although the ability to spend a lot doesn't mean you are any good.

I was in a similar position to you. The mcpx can get away from you really quickly. Just keep practising and you'll get there. I've worked my way round to side on and am approaching nose in flying one battery each night after the kids have gone to sleep.
One thing that helped me was switching from controlling with thumbs on the ends of the sticks to pinching them between thumb and forefinger. I found that the stiction from pressing down on the sticks of my DX7 caused jumpy movements. With pinch my control is much smoother.

I've got one too, and I'm still a noobie.
Its a quick twitchy little heli compared with a 450 or 500, so hovering it nice and stable is quite a challenge!
Remember, if you are less than a couple of feet off the deck, the ground effect will make it wobble about more than it would in 'clean' air.
                Have fun!

Interesting thought with the pinch grip, I'll give it a go tomorrow, I do find the throttle stick a little jerky so that may help me. Made some good progress tonight.

I had a quick go with my old MSR and found it a piece of cake to buzz around in comparison but the pendulum effect started bugging the hell out of me, it never bothered me before.

Out of interest how much bobbing about would be considered acceptable in a reasonable hover, never seen anyone else hover an MCPX and I'm curious how well people can hold them steady.

Just kidding mate. Keep at it and it will click. Then you will go through the same process with circuits, aeros etc...... Such a frustrating hobby at times but good fun, and bloody addictive.

Relieved to hear I don't need talent to fly these things just patience and perseverance.

Glad to say I think its paid off, held it this morning well within a virtual 2 foot cube for a good couple of minutes. Will bask in the glory of a first hover for 5 minutes or so and then to move onto the next challenge, moving from one spot to another without randomly travelling everywhere else to get there.

Looks like the wind has died down today as well so might get outside today as well which will be fun.
