  • I'm ready to start spending some money on upgrading parts of my MSRx...

    Hi all,

I've had an MSRx since Christmas and despite only having flown it about 20 times I'm at the point where I can repeatedly get it in a gentle hover.

I've applied the MMMod today and it does seem to have made a difference, however the real difference will come when I pick up a DX6i on Wednesday (I've already used it with the Heli and it's vastly superior to the stock controller).

I'm now sat here looking at TREX 450's, OrangeRX receivers and various other incredibly expensive things, however before I go down that route I know I need to master the MSRx (and possibly even a CPX).

I've read about various addons and spares (such as aluminium blades/swashes etc) for the MSRx and I'm wondering if it is worth spending money on some of these components and upgrading the heli I currently have instead of one that is more expensive to buy/fly/break.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

    Matt

Don't bother with upgrades....in general lots of parts are a total waste of time and money. For what its worth, just fly it as it is, learn what you need to from it, and move on to another bigger and better heli when your ready..... which won't be to long with a fixed pitch msrx . Save your pennies for the next heli and repeat the process. When you get to the bigger and better machines that you may decide to keep for longer, then perhaps think about a few upgrades then....

    trex 550 (HC3SX)

    trex 600 nitro le (beastx)
    compass 6HV (Spirit)
    dx8.....

its not my dog by the way.

Total waste of money. Keep your money for the next step-up.

Thanks both, I did wonder whether it was worth it...

Out of interest, what would you recommend as a starter CP heli if I am to save my money on the MSRx and spend it on an "upgrade"?

I've read a lot about getting an mCPX but then see people saying that it's too fast for a beginner.

My thoughts were to get a second-hand 450-class heli from somewhere (I can't afford one new!) and learn on that - is that sensible?

I'm not going to do this yet (not until I've got the MSRx under control properly anyway!) but I like to know these things for the future!

        Thanks,

Well, I'll tell you what I did! From a fixed-pitch blade 120SR, I bought a Blade 450-3D. I quickly felt out of my comfort zone though, so copying a friends progression, I bought an mcpx v2 at the same time. That pretty much set the scene for all my heli progression - learn on the small stuff where fear is less and crash cost is minimal and consolidate what I learn on the larger helis when I feel comfortable with a particular move. I still do the same now, albeit now my learning path for a new move is sim->300CFX->big helis!

The mcpx/BL is a fast little b*gger, but you could dumb it down for your purposes. lower HS, dual rates, expo etc. could all help tame it down such that it's not like a knat on speed.

But, a 450 could work too - but you'd need to be a little more patient with it and take your time progressing as a crash will cost anywhere between the £30 to £100 mark - not something you want to do with regularity!

Lol, my other hobbies include Computers, Guitars and Model Railways and I have three kids - I'm constantly worried about expenditure!

My main reasons behind asking all these questions is to make sure I'm spending the money that I have in the best way possible.

I know that this is an expensive hobby - I need to be able to justify my purchases to myself!

Only upgrade (if you could call it an upgrade) I have done to my mSRx is to fit brighter coloured blades, orange in this case. I spent a week in the Spring flying it outside in a large field and every now and again the heli would merge into the background and I'd lose sight of it. Orange blades make it just that bit more visible. But then again I don't have the best eyesight in the world.

Good advice from Tom, I took the same route myself (MSR, MCPX then a Trex 500), that MCPX taught me to fly. The other option is look out for a sim, if counting the pennies then keep an eye out for Phoenix in the for sale section on here i've seen it selling for around £40 recently and would be money well spent.

Yeah, I've been looking at getting a sim but as I run Linux as my only operating system I appear to limited to my choices. I'm thinking about using TXPPM and neXt Heli Sim as a trial and then if that works I'll go for the "proper" stuff.

I've got a birthday coming up and I didn't realise just how much cheaper the BNF version of the mCPX was in comparison to the RTF version, so I may treat myself...
