  • 450x motor problem?

Hi all, following a crash, my 450x makes a strange noise in idle up. Sounds like a mechanical clicking sound.

I'm wondering if the motor is damaged as I can lift the can slightly in situ. That can't be right can it? I never did the loctite mod fwiw.

    450x motor problem?

If you can pull the can up, you may have lost the circlip that holds it down so the can will only be held on by the pinion, the clicking could be the grub screw on the pinion rubbing on something?

I've just done the loctite mod on my 300X, after only 3 flights the motor shaft was marked where it seats in the bearing! Check your motor for play, could be the bearings shot?

I have had 2 crashes with my 450X. Not damaged any bearings and the motor sounds as good as new. WHAT is the Loctite MOD? Never heard of that before.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.
Now too many Helis to mention?

Thanks Tom. I have just checked Freaks and seen the bearing MOD. Has anyone changed the ESC to 6v and done the diode MOD for the tail servo? I'm happy with the way the 450X flies, so I shan't bother.

Thanks for that Tom, very useful. But I cant work out from the video the exact part to Loctite. What are they loctiting? Wont adding Loctite in the bearing make it stick to the motor shaft? Is that what they are trying to do? Hope you get your 450 sorted...

            Best wishes

They are using a fine pin to apply the Loctite to the outside perimeter of the bearing to the bearing housing (motor frame).

So they are securing the bearing just in case it has slop?

Yes, I assume in case it isn't a good fit in the housing.

                    450x motor problem?

It's actually thread locking the motor shaft to the inner bearing race. The shaft isn't a tight fit without it so it develops slop very quickly. The outer bearing is tight in the motor housing.

Do a search on YouTube, there's quite a few how to videos.

so it is securing the motor shaft to the bearing then? It's so not clear from the video... Will need to research this some more...

Did you get chance to strip your motor down then Tom? Did you lose the C clip? Was this mod needed?

Haven't had a chance to take the motor out yet - been too busy with work You can see in the vid below what I'm talking about though. I guess the C-clip is a good guess. I will check, but possibly not for a day or two ..

Wish I'd known about that mod last year when my bottom bearing disintegrated mid flight - well, not mid flight since it ended the flight somewhat spectacularly.

I'm wondering if I might ground the 450 until I can check the motor out ...
