  • Mouseys 450 3d 3GX thread

    Hi all,

So I bought a 450 3d from a guy on here Tom, and I have already done a few bits and pieces to tidy it up a bit so thought I would start a post here about my progress.

So when I first received it it looked like this:

    Lovely aluminium FBL head

So started to unplug all servo cables, learning what goes where and taking photo's as I went along I started heatshrinking all the cables so they look lovely black.

All servo wires nice and sleeved:

    Starting to hide the cables:

Moved the 3GX unit into the bottom ESC tray, swapped the ESC round so the cables weren't dangling about all over, and put the receiver up top:

All looking much nicer! Decided to have a fly on the drive last night (we have a drive big enough for 5 cars so plenty of space) and managed to catch the blades on a box that has the rabbit food in - safe to say I was in the model shop this morning buying more tail rotor blades and main rotor blades. I have also bought a new main shaft + bearing to replace the current one as according to the guys in the shop this could be causing some vibration in the heli.

Thanks again to Tom who has been an excellent help in getting me up and running, without him helping me on Wednesday night I would have struggled so thanks again mate.

Let me know what you think guys, and if you spot something that could potentially cause me trouble please let me know.

Oh come on! - I didn't have the cables hanging out like that! They were cable-tied in place!

Seriously though - amazing difference! Fancy popping down to Bath and tidying the cabling on my Goblin?

Make sure however that the 3GX is secure! Bearing in mind, it has the 3x MEMs gyros that detect movement in the heli. They can be very sensitive to vibration. It was resting on a specific pad where you've now got the receiver and you may find that proximity to the main shaft, and lack of solid base to fix it to causes you problems.

Fundamentally, if the 3GX can move AT ALL, you need to swap it back I'm afraid ...

PS. By specific pads, I mean this stuff HEP3GX01T | 3GX Double Sided Tape

Which shields the 3GX from heli vibrations.

Oh yeah sorry - they were indeed cable tied in place I must have gotten snip happy before I took the first photos! Haha. And yea for sure - teach me how to fly the 450 and I will tidy your goblin cables

The 3GX is secure enough (i.e I cant move it if I try pushing on it etc), but I wouldn't want to cause any problems. Perhaps I should move it back to be safe....hmm back to the drawing board on how to wire it up again...lol

Try sending a PM to a guy on here called Coolice (Ian). He's the expert on 3GX setups. I would worry that the zip tie may be transferring vibes from the body to the 3GX. The double-sided pads are designed to dampen those vibes.

                Thanks Paul.

Just took it out for its first flight with me behind the controls. All was going well until a gust of wind took me by surprise and sent it right....next thing were cutting the lawn and mashing gears ...ah well theyre cheap to replace!

It was windy this afternoon here too. I flew my 450X for one battery then gave up.

You are right... they are cheap to replace but don't get into the mindset of crashing is OK. You learn very little from the crash itself except how to do repairs. The real learning is done when you don't crash. Make sure you don't over-stretch yourself, particularly at first. You are better off doing a great simple hover than a ropey flight moving around. Make sure you have nailed one step completely before going on to the next and you will make good progress from what I hear

Also, initially, just get used to the controls tail-in (with the tail pointing towards you). Don't try to move the nose around as you'll quickly lose orientation ...

I am always flying tail in at the minute, even when im hopping around on the ground. I tend to shuffle until i'm behind it before I try and set off again. Thanks for the advice guys - much appreciated. I am about to post in the wanted section to see if there is someone on here that I could potentially borrow the phoenix sim off for a couple of weeks (although I doubt anyone would want to let me borrow it) I can try though eh. If not I will save some pennies and get it sometime soon. Might see if there is somewhere indoors where you can fly that's local to me.

                        Hey.

I'm with Tom and you've probably changed it already, but I wouldn't use a zip tie to keep the 3GX in place should the sticky pad fail. I used to wrap an Align velcro strap around mine, loosly though to allow the double sided foam pad to still do its job of reducing any vibrations being transfered to the FBL unit. There was a time when fliers were strapping the 3GX down tight, compressing the foam pad, but it's not ideal.

Is this one of your first models?
If yes, perhaps we can help you tame down the model a bit more for those first hovers to make your foray into RC helicopters easier.

That would be super, thanks a lot.

And yes I have changed it back to the original position up top with a 3gx sticky pad under it. Was bobbing around the garden again yesterday, all was well until the tail servo gave up

It is my first heli yeah, so taming would be awesome - where do I start? Lol

Just an update here - I have crashed the heli a couple of times, and seem to have killed my tail servo. Trip to Fast Lads this morning and I have all the parts I need to get her rebuilt. Also purchased a Blade MSR X whilst I was there - great fun!

Time to get my hands dirty and get the 3d sorted! Pics to follow.
