  • Lynx helical / slant gear for 450X

For anybody who's interested - I've just put the Lynx slant gear with 9T pinion on my 450X. Supposed to make it run and sound smoother. Judge for yourself as I did BEFORE and AFTER vids!

Personally, it sounds different / smoother to me. Not necessarily quieter maybe? Anyway, yet to test it properly in the field.

    First stock gear

    Then with Lynx slant gear

There's a reason race gearboxes use straight cut gears. It's because there's less power loss. Helical gears have greater friction and transfer a not inconsiderable amount of power into trying to push the gears sideways, and for the small reduction in noise, I don't think it's worthwhile.

      Definitely sounds smoother that mate.
My 550 V3 sounds a lot smoother with the slant gears than my 550 V1 with the standards gears, which sounds like a tractor in comparison!

        Thanks Dan!

Gixxer, Whether or not they're worthwhile I guess depends on what matters to you. For me, I would sacrifice a bit of performance for a quieter heli. Not having something that sounds like an angry hornet makes me more relaxed, and hence I fly better. That makes more of a real difference to me than most "practical" changes, if you know what I mean!

I think the sound alone is one of the reasons I love flying my Goblin - and why I fly it better than others ... (at least, I think I fly it better, others may disagree!)

I agree... If you want a quieter/different sounding heli and don't mind losing a little power, then it is worthwhile but I'm half deaf at this stage from loud exhausts on bikes, so I don't mind the noise

Thanks for the comparison vids. I prefer the stock sound personally as I like the intimidation factor, it all adds to the buzz of flying for me. It keeps bystanders at a distance too!

I got bored with my mcpx pretty quickly once I could fly it consistently but the threat of death feeling I get from my 450x soon but the buzz back into flying. :-)
