My 7 year old son has been on pheonix for a few months now and is doning really good hovering in all orientations so after lots of badgering from him i decided to put the training gear on my blade 400 3d and let him have a go in the garden last night, he managed to get it off the ground into nice tail in hover but then accidently hit the switch the put in in 3d mode and before we knew what was happening it was in the ground :-( lots of damage do but it can and will be rebuilt i am going to let him keep on practicing with it once its rebuilt as the look on his face once he was hovering was priceless

Have you got your pitch curves the same in idle up as normal mode around the hover position? They should be the same around hover position so if you flick between modes it only increases the head speed and the pitch stays the same so avoids any sudden altitude jumps.
Either way sounds like a proud dad :-)
Enjoy.

I thought you were going to say he thrashed it about the sky like a pro. Sorry to hear he put it in the ground. Poor lad must have been terribly disappointed.
When I was learning I made my Idle-up the same as my normal so I couldn't hit it by accident. Did it once and only just caught it before it went visiting the other side of the world (straight down).
Now I don't do it because I'm used to the switch positions now. Maybe that would help?
I can imagine the look on his face at first hover. What do they call that? Oh yes, a Kodak moment. You did didn't you?
I love the look on excited faces. Usually it's Greenpeace when they find me on a beach and start pushing me back to the water. I don't mind that so much but it really grates when they start digging a channel.

Can you set the idle up mode on Pheonix and get him in the habit of going into idle up after taken off and turning it off before landing. Good practice for when he needs it. Which by the sounds of things want be long.

If you are getting a new TX can you setup a buddy box to yours so you can help him when he gets back on the real ones.

My lad is 11 and has been flying indoors at our club for a while (we only go every other week as thats when I'm up seeing the kids) and I bought him a Blade SR last Christmas as he had been flying a mcx before that. He couldn't get on with the SR so I got him a second hand mcpx which he could hover. Now he's got the hang of hovering I've donated my 450 to him. So far he's only hovered it 6" off the floor but he put the sim time in when I had him for 2 weeks in the holidays (although he dropped the TX and smashed the corner of the case, but that's another story!) so I'm sure when we next go to the club he'll be hovering better. Could do with sorting out buddying his DX6i to my 9xII to build his confidence up and so he can go down the field. I'm sure he'll be overtaking me soon!Neil
