  • Wanted to put a few thoughts in words...

About the Blade mainly, but also a little generally:

A year ago now I started getting into the idea of having something that 'really flies', I chose helis, mainly for space limitations I figured something small enough to fly indoors on cold days.

As the next couple of months progressed naturally I enjoyed the hobby, then on my B'day I bought a FlycamoneV2. I loved putting this on my Blade CX2 but it killed the battery quicksmart (flight time wise) due to the extra weight.

I started looking with longing at something a bit larger, something I could fly in my garden that could easily lift the FC1. Two helis sprang to mind, one was a large CX heli, that would have at that stage maybe been a moose to convert to 2.4 (at this stage I'd tried to do just that with a Twister Skylift which sadly hasn't really flown since). The other was the Blade 400. I chose the latter, thinking I'd get it ordered near the end of June when I was going to be off for a week, have it come around half way into that week and spend the rest of the week learning to fly it.

Now a lot of people say buy once buy right, okay so at the time I did, and to this day don't regret the Blade, though a lot urged me towards a Trex.

My first 2 flights were not successful, both ended in a crash within 2 seconds. Then came nearly 2 months of frustration, knowing very little about helis really I was landed with having to strip, rebuild and test a heli I couldn't even fly.

High winds precluded much of anything, so it was September before Asfalloth on here and I met up at the club he was a member of. And I flew, finally I could fly my Blade.

Time passed and with the summer behind me I started looking towards something larger, maybe a 500/600 class. At this point my mom was a great help, several times she said to me 'if you like it get it, I'll help you out'. But my reply was that it was nearly the end of the season so no point yet, and maybe I'd get it after Xmas, as my plan was to join Asfalloth's club.

Sadly mom passed away Xmas day, and things change then. But this year with some luck I've already done more than in the whole of last year, most of you have seen my vids by now I'm sure.

My thoughts are now that I love my Blade more than ever, I've got her set up right, and can do stuff that this time last year I couldn't even attempt on a sim, heck I didn't have the sim this time last year, just a small 3ch heli.
I guess because mom helped me so much in buying the Blade, it has great sentimental value now more than ever.

Here's to all, whatever you have, enjoy flying it, if it's all you can afford, so be it, still doesn't stop you looking does it, I look at nice cars, don't mean I can afford one.

Sorry for the long post, but seeing some threads here just had to put these thoughts into words.

Very nice story. Your mum sounds very special.

Onwards and upwards learning with these heli's. The sim manages to put you right in your place when you think your a tiny bit good with a FP - CP is another world!

Thanks guys, you're all very kind. One of the things that's helped me through a lot of crap that's happened. I admit the Blade was bought because I really did like the look of it, and partly based on the quality of the CX2 from E-Flite as well. As said, I still love her, always will, guess like that first car, you don't ever quite stop loving it. My CX2 rarely flies now, though I have taken to teaching my nephew on it, he's getting into this too now. He loved watching me fly at the weekend, and enjoyed doing the camera work for me. I know he's joined RCHeliaddict too, so keep your eye out for him.

Here's hoping to put more money in and maybe get a bigger heli, nitro or leccy I don't care, long as it looks nice, flies nice and can do more than the Blade. If not, then the Blade will remain my flag heli as it were. And in that case, I can't see me ever not enjoying flying her.

Your a very fortunate man to have had such a caring and understanding Mum, and no words could have prepared you for her passing away, but you know what mate your Mum got a pretty good deal too, having a loyal Son who looked after her with the loving care only a close loved one can offer.

Her final years could have been a nightmare had it not been for you, so make sure you give yourself a well deserved pat on the back Bro, you deserve it!

As for your Machine, often the best "anything" you buy is the one you can use the most, regardless of size or spec, the Blade 400 is a cracking little number, and with the Carbon and alloy upgrades plus the new canopy make her look something else.

Enjoy her mate gain comfort from the fact that when you have a little hic up with the grass the spares are well within your budget, resulting in her being airborne within days if something got well busted.

This was a very touching account of your personal affairs mate, I wish you the best luck and more for the future.

                          Different but the same...

My wife bought me a shotgun for my 40th birthday. Always been into shooting, always will be. This was a very special gun......It got me back into shooting after many years away from it.

Great sentimental value on that gun, didn't want to swap it or sell it on as I thought, wife, love, special birthday, good gun. It'll do me throughout my shooting career.

I realised after a few years that I'd outgrown the gun, its capabilities & that I would improve my shooting if I upgraded to a better gun. Better balance, better feel & an overall, improved quality & build.

I felt bad that the sentimental value would be lost, but realised that the birthday gun traded in for better gun equalled improved performance/more enjoyment. I realised that a trade in/up was a stepping stone that I needed to take so that I could improve in and enjoy my hobby more.

Wife said that if it meant improvement/better performance that I should go for it, as she wants me to enjoy my hobby & do the best I can in it.

If we realise our own capabilities and even want to push beyond to reach the max we personally can, then we have to have the best that 'we' can work with. That comes to personal preference, capabilities and cost.

Life is about the journey, not the destination. You've been given a stepping stone. Stay there, or jump over to the next one, with a knowing smile.
Do what is right for you in your head & heart.

Sorry for the long post, but you started it........

Oh, my shooting improved & I enjoy my 'other' hobby more because of it.

Please feel free to exchange the word shotgun for heli....

Right now I can't think what is truly best for me.. In my head or my heart, it's hard right now to think beyond each day. In fact, just lately I seem to be watching the clock for bedtime, just grateful to go to bed and sleep.

Once money sorts itself and I know how much I'll have things will change I'm sure, and I'll join a club and start looking to the future more. Maybe to my big heli again. Who knows, with the new freedom to move I may end up buying a nitro, but the only couple I can afford right now don't seem that much more capable than the Blade tbh. One nobody thinks much of, the other is only a 30 class which I doubt will have the guts to do full on 3d, it seems more a sport model.
