  • Spartan settings on a Beam?

    Anyone using a Spartan on a Beam?
    I'm running approx 3200hs, Radix tail blades and a Robbe FS61 tail servo and it wags and bounces around like dog.
    I used an FS61 on my Trex 450 with a 401 and the tail was great, even in fast backwards flight (tail slides, hurricanes, pie dish etc.)
    I expected the same or better performance from the spartan, but so far it's dreadful.

    Any tips?

    lower the gain? I had a spartan on the beam and it was brilliant, best gyro ive used. think I was running 55%.

    you could also look at mounting in a different hole on the servo horn

    i was using a Futuba 9257 for the tail servo though

      well i had same problem with mine but had bought it sec/hand...
      Up/down on gain didn't do very much. Well i crashed <g> so had to replace tail/main shaft but also replace tail bearing and all on the head. Put hardware back on setting as before worked great no wag.
      Other thing i did ..Cut back foam so i didn't touch side frames (foams little winder then plate) and checked balance of new blade.
      So like your getting a vibe off something.

      gyro i had from new

          I've got a Spartan on my Beam and it works fine with a Futaba 9257 servo.

          PM me your email address and I'll send you my ssf data file from the PC interface.

            I dont think you will find a solution in the settings file, sounds like it is a bent bit somewhere. Here's my file from same gyro and heli...

            [Gyro]
            Product=ds760
            Application version=110
            Firmware version=200
            Memory Map version=3
            User comments=
            [Servo]
            High endpoint=101
            Low endpoint=101
            Midpoint trim=0
            Servo=35
            Speed=7
            Type=0
            [Common]
            Direction=0
            Rudder stick deadband=5
            [Mode 1 (Rate Mode)]
            Rudder exponential=-50
            [Mode 2 (AVCS Mode)]
            Acceleration profile=15
            Deceleration profile=15
            Clockwise stop gain=100
            Counter clockwise stop gain=100
            Rudder exponential=-50
            Rudder sensitivity=100
            I'd check the bearings in the tail grips and the tail output shaft as well as the boom for straightness, booom supports for secureness and main bearings. Also as mentioned, not to much frame action on the gyro, cut the foam and check cable tightness to avoid transmitting any unwanted frame vibration to the gyro.. I am sure you've check most of that already though.
            Regards,

            Jason

              If you talk to the Spartan pilots such as Paul (raptorheli2 on here), they generally say the same thing - set the clockwise and anti-clockwise stop gains up to about 140% each way, and drop the deceleration profile down to about 60%. Also set the gain on the Tx so that you get 26% on the PC interface.

              I've used these settings ever since owning a Spartan (now got three) and they've just worked fine straight off. I've used 3 Spartan gyros on 4 helis with exactly these settings and they've all been faultless.

              Weird thing is - if these are the settings that you need to make the gyro work well, why don't Spartan ship the gyros with these as the default settings?

                Strangly I have never fettled with the settings other than the endpoints, flies fine for me

                  But your acceleration and deceleration profiles are both very low at 15%

                    Just looked at all my profiles I have saved (6 of them covering various servo combos and helis I have my gyros on) and they all have that value in there. So unless I did something a long time ago and have copied the settings, I think thats as it is from new.

                    I have two Spartans, one has been on teh Knights and now the 700 and the other has been on teh Bema and now the T450pro a couple of the config files are from the old version fw the others from the newer version.

                    Unless I readsomewhere and in a moment of red wine madness made a settings change I dont think I have adjusted any of them other than end points.

                      Lol - blame it on the vino rosso - works for me every time!

                      The stock settings for these two is 100% on both of them. The one that needs reducing to 60% is the deceleration profile, not the acceleration profile.

                        PM sent Steve.
                        Thanks for the input guys.
                        All the shafts are new, links are free running etc. etc.. I'll try Steve's settings and see what that does......

                          Make sure you get the gain setting on the gyro to 26% for an excellent starting point - repeat..... that's on the gyro, not the transmitter. To get into this feature you have to have it all plugged into the PC with the heli and Tx on, then right-click on the top bar of the PC interface window, and select 'start diagnostics'. Once you've done this, some numbers will appear in faint grey text towards the bottom left hand corner of the window which will tell you the current pulse position of the servo, and the 'actual' gain being used by the gyro. If you then adjust the gain setting on your Tx, the value on the screen will go up and down - set the screen value to 26% and go from there.

                          This is of course a starting value (a bit like 36% on the Futaba 611 amplifier screen), but in my certain experience, I've never had to change it away from this setting.

                          If it still doesn't hold, then it suggests a mechanical problem in the airframe.

                            Ian, check ALL the bearings. Dave (DRMBlack7) had his flying a peach before it went in, but after he repaired it, it had a constant wag on the tail. In the end it was the bearings that were shot in the tail belt tensioner wheels

                              the reason for this is 90 size tails do not need these settings adjusted in the same way, if at all. the tail on a 450 is relatively weak. as the most common helis are 50-90 it has been made with those in mind. the gyro was also designed when the synergy was in thing and we all know how weak the tail is on a synergy, well i do since i've had 2!. so it's always better to start on the weaker side and work upwards as you can fix tail bounce with a click of a mouse, takes a tad more if you blow up your tail gears!

                              cheers
