  • Beam one way collor issue

How many people have had these fail in flight, getting a bit fed up with it now, had another one fail at the weekend, luckaly with minimal damage, shafts etc but the canopy is now finished off, but that is now the 3rd i have had go actually in flight, one time causing a major frame breaking crash that cost quite a bit to put right, the other no damage as it failed in hovering flight.
This is actually my lads heli and failed on the first flight after about a min of flying so that means it was then grounded for the rest of the day and means another order to get replacement parts.
I think the Beam is a cracking little heli but to have 3 failiures surely indicates a problem as i know other people have also suffered this issue and want to know if there are any fixes coming to solve it in the future.

I never broke one in flight (and it wasn't for a want of trying - I gave it a good hammering), but it always broke in a crash (the weak link- not a bad thing). It sounds like you may have something else amiss with it. Your one way bearing isn't slipping causing extra stress on it is it? Or the Jesus bolt isn't being nipped up too tight maybe?

Very carefull with the jesus bolt and don't do it very tight, just nip it up with a bit of thread lock to hold it.
I too have had them break in a crash, fair enough with that, can't complain when it gets binned by dumb thumbs.
the one way bearing seems fine, never heard or felt it slip but i will check it out.
First time the beam crashed was due to the collor failing, and then has failed twise since then.
Have heard it is something to do with the softer shafts, running these lately as the hardened ones were out of stock, and has failed twice with the soft shafts in, though the first(and most destructive crash was with a hardened one fitted).

Not sure the shafts can have any effect on it, I used bothe the originals and the hardened pro ones. Have a look at the portion that would be inside the one way bearing and see if there are any burrs on it or signs on of the bearing skipping on it. Perhaps it was a couple of duds, just very strange when it has happened so far apart and that it's not something I've heard of before.

I also have had these break in a crash not not as yet in flight and as Jamie said its a weak point as far as I'm concerned. Kind of like it throttle holding for you on impact.

Interesting why yours keeps going in flight. Might be worth a quick call to Rob Blake.
            Cheers Matt

Yesterdays one , basically was sitting in an inverted hover and i just heard the motor suddenly squeel high rpm, lost all drive to the rotors and had to put it down inverted, thought at first the pinion had come off, but no was the collor, it had sheared.
Going to strip it right down tonight and see if i can find anything else that might be causing it, like i said, don't mind if it breaks in a crash, probably saves alot of other stuff from breaking/bending

I've also only broken them in a crash, it seems to be almost a 'fusible link' giving a weak-spot which breaks first and hopefully saves other parts, the only issue with this is that they have occasionally been out of stock and I've had to order from the US.

I'm still using the original soft mainshafts too.

I always broke the sleeves in crashes, but have also yet to do one in flight.

However it seems that the very latest batch of sleeves are now heat treated differently again. As you may remember I crashed the Beam at Stainburn and it stripped the main gear, but the sleeve was still intact.

The only downside to this was a slightly longer job of replacing the main gear on the one way hub.

Had my first one go on me the other day..

Spooling up, and thought the same that the pinion had come loose.

Have to admit that it has survived several knocks, and I'm guessing that it could have weakened it in the previous knocks. Something to double check on, on every crash/main shaft replacement.

The sleeve that was in ours was only about 2 flights old on this occation.
Maybe i have just been unlucky, we will see, will still have a strip down and check to be sure

They do seem to be a weak link ive had 3 break on spool up and evry time in a crash cheaper than a main gear though but i just wonder wether they are a little to weak for there own good
