  • More nitro woes.

Just built up the 700 DFC this time complete with new clutch liner and quick UK clutch.

Put it all back together, went outside, put the starter in to prime it with fuel - starter spins, but engine does not. Every now and then it seems to "grab" for one or two rotations of the engine, and then just free wheels.

Pull the starter out, turn the thing by hand. The engine does turn. The starter is going the correct direction.

Faulty one way? I heard some other people having a similar thing? Mine wasnt cold though, its been sat in the house all day!

    Im at a loss!!

The cup can still slip on the shaft when you're using the starter though as it can provide more torque than you will by turning by hand. What I do is put a mark on the top of the shaft (in the cup) and the cup then you can see if the cup is turning on the shaft.
I've ended up having problems with the cup slipping as the shaft doesn't have enough of a cut out in it for the grub screws to grip against, real pain in the arse as you have to strip the clutch stack down to replace the shaft

It's a pain in the arse getting to the flying field and finding you can't start your heli.

After facing this problem twice, I now grind a deeper groove into the shaft.

Ive drawn a line across and tried it again, the cup isnt slipping on the shaft. What a pain in the ass.

I've spoken to Quick UK and they are sending out a new clutch with a postage paid envelope to return the last one. Excellent customer service.

In the mean time ill take your advice Gixxer and grind a deeper ridge in my shaft (oo-er!)

I dont trust those tiny little divets either.

yeah i did, put a little extra in... It came with some anyway but I smeared a bit more on the actual shaft and inserted it as I rotated it.

what wand is it your using? is it a purple anodised one? those are just plain horrible for slipping
the rollers are white plastic crap & they dont last 5 mins on a 90 nitro.

If it's one way bearing grease you have to make sure you put it in the right way .

I went through a phase of slipping starter cups.. kept wearing the grubscrews as soon as it starts to happen. I tried dog points - no better. Then I ground flats..almost made the thing triangular..so guess what snapped!
Final solution was to just deepen the divots with a grind stone and use threadlock on the shaft too. The divots aren't wide/flat bottomed enough for the flats on the end of the standard grubscrews.

                              What are dog points?

Ive just pulled it all out and put the engine in a vice and run it all up as itd be in the heli, minus the heli. The shaft is spinning inside the 1 way, so looks like a faulty clutch.
