After listening to Asids pod cast, I was inspired by the topic of spin blades. I'm thinking of a Trex 600 Pro 3700/6s batteries X2 and a low head speed of 1400rpm, soft head dampeners and a pair of spin blades. The only thing I will be doing with this setup is very smooth sports flying. Will this set-up allow me to achieve 14 minutes plus. continuously on one set of batteries.

sorry, just had to comment on this? Are you flying till your esc goes in to low voltage protection?Originally posted by aparkin View Posttry it m8 surely its just a couple of clicks away on your tx start the timer and see when max time is on your esc slowing you down to land

If so, you will murder your batteries in no time... the best way to determine how long you can fly for is to set a conservative timer initially, e.g. 4 mins, then measure how much you put back into the batteries. divide that by 4 (if you flew for 4 minutes that is of course) and it gives you your mah usage per minute. Calculate how many minutes you can fly for until you reach 75-80% of your battery's capacity and that's your (safe) flight time. Maybe wind the timer back 30 seconds or so to give you time to come in and land with a bit of margin.
Anyway... as for the topic - sounds like a good project. The tail will most likely be mushy at that speed though so I'd consider gearing up to the old normal ratio, or perhaps try some spin semi-symmetrical tail blades, or both. it's worth pointing out too that spin make both symmetrical and semi-symmetrical main blades so make sure you get the semi's.
Also worth looking at changing pinions - you will need the KDE direct motor mount to allow you to get the meshing correct and I think 11T is as low as I've seen but it will get you closer to being within the efficient range of the motor and ESC.
If you want to go all out, get an ESC with active freewheel (such as YGE) as these are more efficient, and indeed more reliable, at partial throttle loads.
plenty to keep you busy there I'm sure!Last edited by Zeeflyboy; 06-11-2011, 01:51 PM.Ridding the world of Helis, one crash at a time....
