  • V3 vs V2 Main Rotor Housing?

    Hi Chaps,

As a result of yet another smash up, I need to replace the SEV2 Main Rotor Housing:

However, the damn thing costs about a fiver MORE than the newer V3 main rotor housing (me no understandee):

And you get a feathering shaft and one piece dampeners as well! (I already have a head button)

So the question is, Can I use the V3 head? I'm assuming that the only thing needed (which are supplied) are the longer balls so that the linkages line up? Other than that the only real difference is the overall disc diameter as the V3 is wider than the V2.

    Cheers,

Should work and expect alot of peeps already tried this. Let me know how you get on Simon. Guess youll need the rest including V3 washout and links but not looked into it properly myself.

I almost did this to mine to eliminate vibs but had too many V2 / SE type spares.

Well so far I've managed to find out a bit more which was written by H60 on the Helifreak forum:

If upgrading a v2 (or v1), you should get the v3 upgrade head block (HS1296 or HS1296A). The part is the same, except for an extra jesus bolt that comes with A (for the same price). If you Keep the v2 grips you use the linkage ballA's' that come with the head block. if you use the Sport Grips, you must use the Linkage BallG's that come with the Sport Grips. this is because v2 grips have extra metal on the ball mounting flange that is not there on the Sport Grips.

also if you use the v3 head block with v2 grips you want HS1300 fixed length ball links
if you use the sport head and grips the part # is H45105 for the links
and of course the Pro uses even a different part #.

so you should only use HS1296(A) with v2 grips, ballA's and HS1300 links
        or
HS1296(A) with Sport Grips, ballG's and H45105 links

So - I'm going to order the V3 head, & the HS1300 ball links from Fast Lad and see how it goes together. I will write this up later when and if it works out!

        Cheers,
        Simon

Interesting thread Simon. Be good to hear your thoughts with the upgraded head on your V2. Cant beat 450's.

            Hi Pete,

I should get the new head block next week. I'll try and post some set up pics and a summary of how it goes. If it works out well then I'll convert the other 450.

            cheers,
            Simon

no way I will remember all those combinations Simon. Will have to make a note of those part numbers I think.

looks like you're having fun with this - will look out for your update

I have some fixed length head links on the clone450 but found they were mega tight fit and too stiff. Used a bit of wet n dry paper on the inside edges and fit fine now.

                Hi all,

V3 (sport) head fitted now, here are some pics and comments:

The head kit looks like this and includes the rotor holder, feathering shaft (with bolts and washers), dampeners, longer balls for blade grips and jesus nut/bolt:

The feathering shaft is quite a bit longer than the stock version:

One thing to note is that the "collars" are a lot thinner than the stock v2 ones:

The fixed length ball links are great (make sure you get the v2 versions as I think the v3 versions are too long), the short ones are used to link the blade grips and the longer ones are from the see-saw:

The main rotor holder put together:

Complete head installed on the 450:

                Comments:

Easy to put together, no real issues at all. The main points were:

-The fixed length ball links were slightly tight but this was easily fixed with my ball link sizer. I think using the fixed length is sooooooo much easier that the standard links, they are much easier to work with and because they are fixed length the only links that need adjustment are the swash to head links to adjust pitch etc.

                - I used the dampeners that came with the set, I normally install truebloods, but I want to see how the stock ones behave first.

                - Having fitted the top part of the head I noticed that the lower links (the original ones) needed a fair bit of tweaking which obviously meant my original head set up was not quite right.

                - Re-checked all of the head, and re-set the blade pitch.

                - Spun up and she is sweet! Not yet flown but I hope to do this later.

                Conclusion:

Bearing in mind that the V3 sport rotor head holder is actually cheaper than the standard V2 version then this change is worth doing if you mash up your rotor holder block. The only things to watch out for is that the feathering shaft and collars are different to the stock sizes.

The other thing is that the overall blade disc diameter increases by about 1cm which will have some effect on the flight characteristics.

Looks good and I think it's been a worthwhile change especially as I had to get a new rotor blade holder anyway!

I will come back with some hover and flight details soon.

I hope you have found this useful.

                Cheers,

i was wondering if the 450 sport tail unit would fit the 450 SE v2 as it looks 100% better than whats on it...

I don't see why not, it might be my next project - but only when I inevitably bend my current tail.......only a matter of time! If you get the chance to try it then let us know how you get on.

Yes it does. I have got a sport tail unit and grips etc on my V1/V2 hybrid

Just a quick report to say that I've completed a test flight and everything looks and feels great! I'm happy with the outcome.

No issues at all, so I would say that this is a worthwhile thing to do

                            Cheers,
