talon 90 on trex 550

V1, 550 blades, mx motor, sport flyer moving toward 3d. Fbl, beastx,

New to me, and ready to go, but with std 70a esc....
So, needs an upgrade.....

Is the talons 90 ok on a 550 . It has the 20a bec pro in it..... So is 90 enough for the 550.

Why do you need an upgrade from the Align 70A ESC? I have 2 x 550FBL with the AR7200BX. The only thing I do, is to disconnect the BEC cable from the ESC and use a Life for Rx power. I do Piroflips, rainbows, flips, hurricanes, big loops with flips on top, tic tocs etc, etc and never had one fail on me yet.

BTW, If the Talon is good enough for the 550DFC with the 600 tail boom, then it should be good enough for the 550FBL Haven't tried my 550DFC yet. Not finished the build and set up.

I have the 550 V1, with MX motor, Beast X and DFC Head and original 70A ESC.
Stick banging - no problems so far ...

I have the Talon on my 550, but didn't use the BEC. I just don't trust them, so have a little 2000mah Li-fe on the side frame instead.

Talon on my 550E DFC using the internal 9amp continous BEC and it's great.

I can probably answer the reason behind fitting the Talon over keeping the stock Align ESC and that is to make use of the govenor function, which is handy and saves having the taps wide open. Granted the stock ESC works, especially when you bypass the stock BEC and use a seperate BEC PRO or LiFe pack perhaps. However to fit these you need to spend money and the small extra cost to fit the Talon then becomes more cost effective in the long run.

You're probably using the older gear ratio and if so will be fine, but on the newer 550's with the slant gears I find the addition of a 700E pinion helps to keep the govenor happy if you need to run higher head speeds.

70 amp esc running 550 blades isn't that pushing the esc , I have a synergy e5 on 12s with a cc 80 esc on 550 blades and its running 67 amps according to the data log .

I owe a V1 550 with DFC conversion. Ran the stock 70 amp ESC for nearly 2 years. Fitted a talon 90 this year. Definitely noticeable difference in performance, get one. Was sceptical about the talon due to a lot of failures on heli freak on the goblin 500 forum but mine has performed perfectly. The heli has completely transformed when I added this ESC and vbar, more lively and responsive, the align servos feel like they have a lot more kick. Governor isn't as good as my kontronik or YGE but its still good.

thanks for the replies. I must admit that I didnt expect so much support for the std align esc with all the stories of failiure floating around the forums..... so, on a budget, just popping on a life pack with the standard esc should keep me flying for a while then..... while i decide on a talon perhaps, or not.

I have put it in the air for three gentle test flights with just the 70a std esc and it felt great..... dare I push it any harder with just the esc, or do I need to get the life/bec pro on asap to be safe?

I've also read a lot about the 70 amp esc not being quite enough but my friend has been flying one on his 550 for 18+ months without issue

As they say you always see the horror stories on forums and rarely the positive stuff as people tend to post about problems rather than posting just to tell you all's well

If you're that worried get a bigger esc
Or you'll be thinking about it every time you wanna bang the sticks

Hey.

The ESC part itself is fine, it is the BEC which is rated too low for FBL use. I was 3D'ing my stock V1 with the 70amp unit, but I felt it running hot in the summer months so felt it best to boost the BEC power to the servos.
A friend flew the stock Align ESC combined with a CC BEC PRO for some time without problems and I would suggest this route, however with the price of the BEC PRO your almost to the price of the Talon with it's added features.

I run the stock Talon90 on my 550e DFC with no issue as Don said earlier. I have had no issues at all (even when Don flew it lol), it doesn't get hot even on the one day of summer we had!
Not sure how much effect if you were to change to say 3GX v3.1 would have on the Talon70 with the added current draw that 3.1 creates though, maybe Ian (coolice) can comment on that. I know nothing about Beast X performance or how it drives the servo's, but if it uses power like v3.1 you might want to consider upgrading the Talon70 to a 90
