  • 8T / 9T 3.17mm pinion

    Hi Chaps,

Any ideas where I can source small pinions for the Align 430L motor?

I think the shaft dia is 3.17mm. I am sure I saw someone mention some pinions from midland being suitable but I can't find where it was (I must read too many forums! LOL)

    TIA
    Regards,

I think you're fine using Logo 14 pinions.
If you're not using a 4S setup, I would be suprised if you need to go down as far as 8 or 9 tooth on the 430L as your headspeed would be too low.

    430L 3S on 8 tooth pinion: 1900 approx
    430L 3S on 9 tooth pinion: 2100 approx

On 4S, however, the 8 tooth would give you around 2500 and the 9 tooth would give you around 2800, the latter being better on the Trex450.

    Cheers,

      Doubt you'll find them.

      I could be wrong though

I have a 9T on my Trex but even on a 2.3mm shaft there is very little meat left around the pinion so I think a 3.2mm would be a liability if you can find one...

no such thing as 8/9T pinions in 3.17mm, with he blade tooth spacing you can't actually make a full pinion with only 9 teeth.

Yes - it is for a switch to 4s - I need to buy some more batteries and have 1x4s and 2x3s at present. Figured I would go all 4s and sell the two 3s ones. Hence the request for the pinion, I run woodies at the moment so thought the 8T would be about right.

So if I just wound down the gov on the Jazz with my current 11T pinion, would that suffice? I am cautious about this as if the energy isnt being driven through the motor, it has to be going to heat in the ESC... hmmm..?

Suggestions (apart from Ade and the usual buy a Knight instead LOL)
                      Regards,

A mate of mine has a 430L motor running on Kokam 4s packs and an 11 tooth pinion on an Align ESC. I think his throttle curve (governor) is set around 87%.

Be advised though that you should probably use carbon blades as woodies are not meant for high headspeeds!
Certainly not the headspeed you'll have on 4S and 11 tooth pinion on that motor. Ballpark 2900-3000.

Yep thats what I thought, hence the quest for a smaller pinion, I tach mine to 2400 at 0 degrees in general

11T is the smallest that will fit the 430L, unless there is a way to change the shaft for a smaller one.
When I had an x400 which has a smaller main gear it really needed a 9/10 tooth as it was overloading the 25A ESC with the 11T/430L 3550kv I had then. On an x400 you need one tooth less than a trex.

So no thoughts on just using the 11T and ramping down teh headspeed with the Jazz gov then?
