Hi i am fairly new to electrics and just completed my trex 600 elf pre, i was wondering do you have to set up the castle creations ice2 80hv? the one that comes with the kit, as there is noting mentioned on setting of the esc in the manual?

HI mate, they're supposed to be setup from the factory, but you need to make a few changes to it to make it optimal. I would recommend using fixed end points on this heli, as the governor won't hold the tail at the maximum headspeed it can provide. You also need to setup your transmitter to work successfully with the CC ESC. What Transmitter are you using? Also, I assume you have the CC PC link cable?

Don't worry about Autorotation or Governor mode setup videos (unless you want to use it). I had mine setup in governor mode but had no confidence in the model and had the tail blowout a few times. Set it up on a 95% flat throttle curve and flew it yesterday for the first time like that and it's a totally different helicopter! Much smoother, flies nicer, tail holds great!
There is also this setup list from the CC website. This should do you fine, just go through the menus one at a time and you can't go wrong
The only change I would make to their list is Motor PWM at 8khz rather than 12khz like they have it there. If you're not using governor mode, setup your throttle type to 'Fixed End Points'. That also means you won't need any of the governor gain, Head speed or auto-rotation options.

Programme the ESC FIRST then do your throttle calibration on your Transmitter.

Hey.
Yes, you will need access to (borrow or purchase) a Castle link cable to setup the ICE esc. Having setup an EFL recently the ESC wasn't set properly from the factory :-(
Also I would suggest govenor mode, the ICE govenor works surprisingly well, the model though does demand a high head speed for any spirited flying to keep tail rpm up for good tail hold. The manual suggests good rotor rpms for hovering and idle up positions.

You can, but it's not ideal. The govenor is a big help for 3D, but you need a Castle Link to set it up which is the only downside.
There's no one in your local club with a lead you could borrow is there? What shop did you buy the model from? I'm wondering if they could offer to set the ESC up for you as it's quite simple.

Throttle "curves" are NOT needed for electrics.
Your TX in normal mode should be something like the example below and idle 1&2 complete flat lines. It's what's called end point throttle governing.
Normal mode. Idle1. Idle2.
Pos 0= 0%. 90%. 95%
Pos 1= 80%. 90%. 95%
Pos 2= 80%. 90%. 95%
Pos 3= 80%. 90%. 95%
Pos 4= 80%. 90%. 95%
Or at least something like that

No, not for setup of the basic operation. Throttle calibration is done using the transmitter and ESC only.
If you're not worried about using the govenor just set the throttle curve points as Downdraft & dani-r have recommended and fly that way.

Using the govenor mode yes, the ESC will hold a specific rotor rpm. On throttle curves alone, no, the rotor rpm will change more drastically as pitch is applied to the rotors. At the mid stick 0 degrees position the head will over speed as the ESC will be running 95% power with no means to get feedback on what rpm the main rotors are doing. Hence why I suggest running the govenor, which unfortunately requires a Castle Link to setup.
