How important is having the FBL main shaft in a FBL heli?

As long as you have the links to fit..

But lowering the head by using the shorter main shaft makes a noticeable difference to way the heli fly's - Feels sharper and like it has a bit more oompf

Yes, I'd recommend to upgrade. Also, if you use a converted FB head, get the FBL centerpiece. It lowers the head further.
Even so, it is way too high, IMO (176 mm blade-boom distance, compared to 140 mm on the X7).Woohoohoohoohoohoohoohoohoohoohoo -Barbra StreisandComment

When I bought my 700le and 600le 3G, the shafts were the normal ones and not 3G ones :/---------------------------------------------------
