  • R clips on the 700

I have to admit that I have been too lazy to put the R clips on the canopy when flying my 700n. They can be quite fiddley, especially in cold weather.

So far I have just flown trim flights and gentle sport flying and have had no problems, but once I get the engine run in, I will fly it harder. Not too hard, because I am not that good, but tic-tocs and flips etc..

Is it really necessary to use those R clips on the canopy mounts, or will I get away without? It looks like I will be okay, but appearences can be deceptive. Would the canopy come off without the R clips?

I can give you half an answer on this!!

I have got QuickUK Thumb screws on the rear of the canopy, and the standard posts for the R Clips at the front. Never use the R Clips, and never had the front of the canopy lift off the posts yet.

You should be ok, but i just feel that tad safer with the thumb screws on the back!

When I first built my 700 many moons ago, I found that the stock canopy started to crack around the mounting posts after about 5 times on and off with the canopy - I guessed this was down to having to 'stretch' the canopy over the extended posts. I changed to Quick UK posts with thumb screws (no stretching required) and have never had a crack since, after about 4 years.

I didn't even think of that side of things, just whether or not it was secure, but now you mention it, I have seen the initial stages of cracking from the beginning. I just took advantage of the Midland sale, blinging the elevator servo mount and putting a tail boom support brace on, but maybe I would have been better off putting improved canopy posts on. Oh well.

RC booya mounts very good. Don't vibrate loose and fall off as my quick thumb screws seem to like doing. Never used R clips on the standard ones.

I saw a video recently of a 700E lose its canopy. It was inverted at the time and the canopy went through the rotor disc, taking the help down with it. The damage was terrible and it woke me up. Whatever solution you employ (I use QuickUK screw mounts which are okay) make sure its solid.

I use the r clips, but I have see an very hard core 3d flyer fly standard mounts no r clips for over a year no problems.
