  • Mounting Fan & Hub on YS50?

Just a quick question about mounting the fan and hub on the engine.

In the vids that I have seen they just hold the fan with a towl and tighten it down! But a friens and experianced pilot at the club said it will come loose with that method and said I need to use his engine lock, which locks the crank I think and then give it a damn good tightening...

    Any tips?

Other thing was (Bear with me I have never built a nitro before) he siad I would need to dial in the starter shaft, but on the vids I have seen Align have used a different design to most others by using a one way in the clutch starter shaft seperate as opposed to them being one peice. Which means you can't dial it in..?

    Is this the case?

    Cheers

Iv tighten mine up when holding the fan with the towel and never had a fan come lose ever,

Dont worry about the starting shaft, as its free spinning when the engine is going and its very hard to balance something like that, i think he might of meant dial in the fan as they can be a out of balance when on the engine and cause you some vibration

That's what I thought, but he fly's a Synergy and the starter shaft is part of the clutch, it's all one peice and was lead to believe that this is a normal design which is why he thought I would have to dial it in, not knowing that the 600n was different.

I have got the Align metal fan so hopefully it should all be nicely balanced

      Cheers

Ive got one of the crank locks, which I have used have to say I dont like using it, it feels like the internals could easily be damaged, but so far no problems.

If it's the type that screws into the piston head and locks the piston up, put it in the bin and walk away. Unless you want to damage your piston?

If it's the nylon type tool that you insert into the base of the engine having removed the backplate - they're perfect for the job.

          Cheers,

Yes it's the nylon one where you take the back plate off to lock the crank

Is it a good idea to do this or does holding the fan with a towl do the job ok?

            Cheers

If you've got the tool for the job - I'd use it
I haven't had a problem holding the fan with a towel so far either, but the right tool for the job is a better bet.

Yeah I hear'd about that one not quite as easy on a YS as it is with the OS carb I don't think..!! Maybe I'm wrong.

                    Cheers

The only think I don't like about the toothbrush method is the chance of chipping a bit of toothbrush off and into the engine. That and the fact that most of todays toothbrushes have contoured handles (soft too) which are a sod to fit in there in the first place, and get bitten into or cut off completely by the sharp edge of the crank

It does work though, and I've used that method too!
