Docile 700LE

My 700 is currently set up to fly sports flying (+/- 10 degrees).

I am planning to take my practice and take my A with it and so want to tame it down a bit. I dont want to change mechanical setup, so how do I make it more docile through my DX7?

Change pitch and throttle curves?

I assume the aim is to reduce pitch range and reduce headspeed?

If you have no expo set up then put 30% in that will help.

Probably reduce the pitch curve a bit and reduce the cyclic rates, maybe add some more expo on the cyclic. Headspeed... I'm not sure if you'd necessarily want to lower it but sure others will give their views.

Reduce the pitch, aileron and elevator swash throws in the AFR menu.

Turn the heasdpeed down a bit..

Just to add to the above, for the A test hovering stuff, you might find it helps to set your normal mode pitch curve so that around the point where the heli hovers you have a milder slope. This is the only way to get the effect of something like expo on the throttle / pitch stick. So probably somewhere around 3/4 stick take the pitch curve down a bit. So you end up with a pitch curve that starts to get more horizontal than vertical somewhere below 3/4 stick and covers the range where your hovering is at. This is, in essence, what some of the F3C guys do for their hovering mode. You want to be able to get settled into a steady hover with the skids at eye level and keep your height consistent.

The important thing to remember is to be comfortable with the setup. When I take people for their BMFA tests, I always tell them I don't want to see their machine screaming or looking twitchy, but at the same time don't go to the other extreme to the point it makes it more difficult to fly. You should be able to hover it about in a breeze without the Heli jumping up and down (because of too much pitch and therefore twitchy) and requiring masses of cyclic corrections (again because of too much cyclic pitch making it twitchy).

As a starting point, if your ail and ele rates in the swash afr menu are about 60%, take them down to around 45%. It will make it a much easier machine to fly smoothly other than that, a modest headspeed of around 18-1900rpm would be great, and then practice practice practice

Just be very careful changing settings to less responsive than you are used to and make sure you are familiar with the new settings- I find you get used to reacting with certain inputs and all of a sudden the heli does not react like you are used to, so go slow and easy after you change the responsiveness to allow you to get used to it.

normally to tame a heli down i change the pitch curve so it has a more horizontal part at the hovering point

Thanks all for the suggestions, I will have a play around and see what I feel comfortable with.

I am planning to leave my 600 setup a bit more sporty, so I will hopefully get used to the 2 helis behaving differently.
