  • 700fbl ball links

Ok i totaled a 700fbl last year 3mins into its maiden due to a ball link on the blade grip failing i have just test flown a new 700 with a beast x and it flew spot on until i lost the engine mount bolts anyhow it felt very good but last night i noticed Tim (busterboy) had crashed his 700fbl due to the same broken ball link so is this an issue or am i worrying for nothing?is there an upgrade available or should i just stop worrying and fly the thing

How long is the link that failed and how is it constructed (standard metal rod with plastic ends or fully moulded plastic part)?

Is there a chance that it didn't fail so-to-speak, as in break, but banana'd under load and simply popped off the ball at one end or the other before being flung off the head completely at the other end?

I know it's all supposition, but my idea of the heavier duty link rod would at least rule out the banana-under-load idea, and MA have already found this to be a problem on flybarred heads over the years, hence the selected 3mm rods on the latest 90 size heads.

weird, Mikado uses very soft steel for their pushrods. I'm sure it's done intentionally: If it's pulled too hard, the links break. If pushed too hard, it goes banana.
I've bent them a couple of times while carrying the heli, but it hasn't caused any problems in flight yet.

I bought a set of QuickUK ones Paul and one of those busted in 3 flights.

Maybe I am unlucky but wasnt impressed.

I posted a picture of the busted link too, Should have contacted Budd and gone further but I never.

Glenn.. I think its one of those moments you could worry about for years.

Mine is fully repaired and ready for its next flight.

My mind won't be on broken links again until it happens next time.

When I was looking over Steve Roberts's F3C machine at the 3D champs, I did notice how beefy the JR links look. They are the grey ones that have kind of 'fingers' on each side.

I have got the full set of QuickUK links and balls here ready to fit to my 700.

For what its worth imo, with the loads envolved, links can and do sometimes fail best thing anyone can do to prevent a failiure
is to check your links befor every flight as you should! though
i must say sh#t can still happen

I think you have to be really careful using ball link pliers as they can leave a nick or a scratch on the links. This could leave a weak point on the link.
