  • BeastX 700 flies :)

I've had a lovely week of evenings as it is half term, I have to work and my wife has taken the kids the her parents for the week.

It was a perfect opportunity to go FBL on the 700 and not have to clear the kitchen table every night

The Beast X fitted easily but after the 500, I am very conscious of setting the unit up so there is no wire drag on it as the instructions say. I saw a BeastX at Charmouth on a 700 which had been mounted with the wires disappearing inside the frame behind the electronic pod. This had meant drilling some holes to route the rather short 15cm wiring. It is a stretch getting the wiring from the BeastX unit to the Rx which is mounted in the right hand lower hole on my 700.

I decided to fit the Beast X with the wiring loom facing forwards, but stiffened up the servo and Rx wire bundles with cable tidy- this allows the cables to be fixed to the frame to secure them, but also arc up to the unit to minimise vibration- I'll try and post some photos later.

The RJX head was not quite as good as I hoped- the metal work is lovely, though chrome is a pain in the arse with greasy hands and nitro :P It all went together well and looks great on the 700- it sits lower than the standard FB head.

The main issue was the linkages. The swash driver links needed a little reaming- there were no instructions with the kits and the RJX website is classed as suspicious! You need to fit the shorter ball links to the swash plate otherwise the swash driver links go though too much of an angle as the pitch changes.

I used some standard Align links to the blade holders- the RJX ones are clumsy and the links are very very stiff, but have minimal tolerance for a gentle reaming. I used some normal Align ball links on the blade holders- they are not absolutely perfect as they are about a millimetre shorter than the RJX ones.

I tried seeing if I could get the blue light on the BeastX set up without changing the servo wheels- nowhere close unfortunately. I had ordered the Align 3G wheels so changed to these with the ball links on the inner hole. It is still not perfect It was 6.5-7 degrees of pitch before I got the blue light. Short of drilling shorter radius holes on the bell cranks, I can see no other way of speeding up the mechanics.

The maiden flight was fine at lunch time today- I could not do much as it was in my close to home field up the road and I do not want to irriate people with noise. It took off fine, hovered, did some slow and fast stationary piros and seemed fine. There was a little tail drop on fast vertical climb, but that is easily sorted.

I need to get to the club field to really sort the set up, but so far a nice project and working well.

Only had a couple of flights on mine last Sunday, but was very impressed. Looking forward to getting the motor run in and chucking it about.
        Cheers,

Very happy with mine on the 700

Tim - it's even finally dragged me kicking and screaming from the 500's. Ask Tom, they actually stayed in the car last Sunday

Thinking about giving the beastx a go on a 700LE. What considerations do I need to make for voltage?

I will be running a totally stock 700LE with Align FBL head and stock align electrics (including 2in1) and DS650 Tail servo.

Basically need an idiots guide to wiring setup............coz I'm an idiot.

None if you are using the 2 in 1. You wouldn't need any special wiring, just plug everything in as per the instructions.
                          Cheers,

                            Crikey that was easy.

Just about to press the buy buttons on a shiny 700LE........will have to wait for BeastX to come back into stock so will nick my vbar from the 450 for the time being.

Very easy wiring and nothing special to do at all. Radiocontrolled shop Ireland still have Beast X's in stock I think.
