  • Finally got out but new problems :(

I finally made it out earlier after a few weeks non flying.. and I only managed a tank and I had to go home

I've got a problem which I cant get my head around, When I started the 600, it just kept cutting out. So I leaned it out to 1-1/4 turn from 1-1/3. and increased the throttle sub trim by a massive 10 clicks to keep it idling even then it still wanted to cut out but I kept some throttle on to keep it going.. I managed a tank and brought it back to refuel... After refuelling, I tried to start it up again but it just wont start.. it felt like something was sticking or binding?

So, home I went and I stripped the engine and checked it all over.. everything was fine and I cant find a fault at all.. So just to make sure, I started it up in the garden.. same problem with starting.. friction somewhere and keeps cutting.. but now i've actually noticed that the clutch is still biting on idle and slowly spinning the blades

I've checked the whole stack and the engine and everything seems normal? I cant seem to find out why its biting when idling and cutting the engine.. does anyone have any ideas? Cheers

Sounds like the clutch has thrown a leave Eddie, just check that the gap between the clutch main body and each independant leaf is the same. Check for cracks also.

Cheers Dave, I've checked this previously and it was near ok.. I did notice that one of the leave was slightly off (pointing more upwards) about 1-2mm.. I bent it back down and there was no cracks.. So I presume its best to get a new clutch? its only had 2 gallons with this clutch

I would re-line the clutch bell as well Eddie, i found that my clutch didnt bite until about 40% throttle which can cause the clutch leaves to snap off! Its a 10 minute job and gets the clutch biting earlier to its less likely to break!

Hi Dez, I''ve actually changed the clutch from the Align to a the Lynx one at the start.. So I dont have that screaming before biting scenario

Eddie if it was pointing up slightly then I would suggest that it's cracked mate. It's difficult to see it against the black. Mine was the same and I didn't see the crack to start with.

After reading this thread I'm glad I bought a new clutch liner as mine does bit until about 30-40% throttle either and ten likes to cut out due to te sudden load when it does bite.

I find the clutch bells differ dimensionally. Some are fine others it takes a while to bite as your finding. I've started to do my own clutch liners using a clutch and a wrap of tape to define the size. If there is too much of a gap add a little bit of A4 paper between the liner and the bell the same shape as the liner, the epoxy will penetrate the paper and still stick to the bell.

Hi mate.. As mentioned.. Mine wasnt due to "LE clutch syndrome" i.e Engine screaming before biting and causing stress facture or cutting out.. I changed to a Lynx Innovations clutch straight away at the start and it was more progressive like a QuK one.. but ordered a Quk one this time round instead.. not sure why the leave broke just after 2 Gals?

Another way like you mentioned is to change the liner.. get the ElyQ one or custom it like Daves mentioned

I had the same happen on my 700LE- the clutch started sticking and gripping more ( not screaming), I had some blade revs at idle, then a leaf broke in my elevator failure crash. In retrospect I think it may have been starting to fail.

I guess the take home message is if your blades are spinning a bit at idle, or more than they did, check or replace the clutch.

I did mine the same way as waveydavey, the bit of paper just makes sure the gap is tight. If its a wee bit tight just hold the head tightly andd give a the throttle a few blips, this will burn the excess clutch liner off and should give you almost perfect settings
