I spoke at length tonight with a mate of mine who works in the aerospace industry on the heat treatment of metals. I was telling him of the problems with a few of the 700's have had with the tail snapping off the output shaft, and could there be a problem with the heat treatment of those shafts. Turns out the guy in the next office to him is a senior air crash investigator specialising in metallurgy, and the causes of failures in metals and things like stress fractures etc. He has access to x-ray machines and other equipment that can help diagnose those problems. I have a slightly bent shaft for them to test for hardness, but what I really need is a shaft that has been snapped in flight. That way they can see the structure of the metal 'inside' the fracture.
On the shaft that I have, I was able to press the plastic gear off the shaft, and it will press back on again over the splines. This is good, as there is a very good chance that the shaft can be re heat treated to change its structure and therefor no more in flight failures.
If this is do-able, then I should be able to get some done during the 'night shift'
for beer tokens (I hope)
Let me know who is interested in having this done to either a new shaft or your own shaft.
This is very early stages, so cannot promise anything yet.
Once again, if you have a broken shaft, please PM me and send it to me to be x-rayed.
Cheers Rob.

Well considering the number of problems that have occured there aren't many replies on here. I haven't had one break yet but I would be interested to know the results of the analysis and have a couple of shafts done in readiness when you get the results.
