  • A Minor Altercation with the Ground

Well, the 600 engine has had a couple of tanks thru it since my repair and all seems fine.

However, as I was almost done on the second tank I dumb-thumbed it during a low-level side on hover and the tail blades made contact with terra firma.

Once again the tail drive gear, forward TT umbrella gear have taken a hit. I've got spares from my last strike so that's sorted. However the autorotation tail drive gear has shed a tooth so I'm gonna need a new one of those, and I've yet to strip the tail so there may be more.

It wasn't a great day at my field today. One member came down hard and bust a set of blades (and more beside no doubt) on his 600E. Another guy had a boom strike on his scale Lama.

    Not the best of days...

I'm afraid I agree with Paul here, this is standard issue. Have replaced my gears on my 600 three times now.

That's one thing I like about belt driven tails, you can catch the ground a bit and remain unscathed (or maybe just chip a tail blade or something).

Well you can see where he went wrong, the motor's not even attached!

Mart I did the same thing while hovering over some gravel, hit s few stones and chewed the TT gears on my 600LE. Gravel is not the best of places to hover with spinning blades either, it's like a shotgun!

Well, having stripped it I've replaced the forward umbrella gear and the front drive gear assembly from stock.

Just need to order up an autorotation gear and I'm sorted. No other damage.

I had the torque tube gears

I never strip the bevel ones its always the one that connects to the auto gear.

Mostly, i strip then in mid air doing reversals there so weak.
