  • My maiden in 600LE, tuning Q?

Thanks to the many responses, thats helped my first ever Nitro build in the last few weeks (and Finless!)

Well, this evening after work.. I took it off the ground for its first Hover.. I was very scared as it was just new to me....

    well....

    Good things..

It nearly all went well, tail was locked on, hardly any major vibrations and no high frequency vibes!! Just need the blades tracked slightly! Held well.. So very happy!

    Bad things..

I've been idling the 55H at 2 turns from closed for the 3 tanks and i've leaned it out to 1.5 turns for its gentle break in. However during tonights 2 ft hover, I can see a river of unburnt fuel coming out off the exhaust? Do I keep it at this for a few more tanks or do I lean it out even more? Engines are new to me so I cant tell what its like by the sound!

Also, I'm still not sure about Nitro's.. its actually really smokey, really loud and really messy!!

You should be sure about Nitro's, as you've just given a good explination of them.

Welcome to the club. Can't help with the 55 as I've got a 50. Sounds like your running it a bit rich now. Maybe start turning the mix down 2 notches at a time!
You can teach a man everything. Apart from experience.

If your only hovering Eddie try leaning the mid range a bit. Your not on the top needle mate. At the minute I wouldn't touch it. You need a bit of heat to run an engine in, hover for about a minute or two and then do some full power climb outs if your happy to do that. Bring it back in and feel the back plate on the engine, you should be able to hold your finger on there without it feeling too hot. If it's cold your too rich etc etc etc. Find a tuning article on the net and read it and then read it again.

They are noisy and they are a bit messy, have you got a deflector on the pipe so it pushes away the fuel/oil from the airframe? You shouldn't end up with much on the airframe unless your inverted.

Commit to nitro, you've bought it and built it so go for it, it's not going to get any quieter mate.

I have mate.. been reading alot on Helifreak but theres been no definate answers.. just people with trial and error and no mention on starting points but plenty of mention that its way too lean at 2 turns on both! Finless's, "engine breaking" gives good info on the testing but hes using a 50SX-H, so again no help on final tuning on the 55H.. I think i'll invest in a temp gun aswell for more accurate readings.

Yep but the Align pipe seems to flex alots from the engine vibes and it still goes everwhere? Can I get a stiffer pipe?

Yeah.. it was alot of money.. i find nitros annoying, as I like clean simple & effecient electrics.. it was 87% of peoples fault on here, as you guys pursuaded me to go nitro!! I still love it though!! lol!

Thanks Nick, I think i'll slowly crank it down to the 1.25 from 1.5 tomorrow.. give it a few more tanks to be safe and see how I get on!
