As a possible alternative, Just engines have a geared starter that is quite small but very powerful. I know someone using this starter on big petrol planks. Next time I get a chance I'll try it with a wand.

(go to accessories and then to starting gear, I couldn't see how to link directly to the item)

One thing to watch with the Align super starter is whether your 3S 2250s will fit! Its quite snug and if you're using cheapy lipos for your 450 and want to just swap them in they might not fit (my zippy / loong maz's didnt). I ended up taking it apart and effectively permanently fitting a Loong Max as I now charge it in the starter...

Nice posh lipos like thunder power etc fit fine...

This is true and it was my first dissapointment with the Align. I unpacked it and wanting to try it I tried to pop in one my Lipos only to find that out of the ones I had only ONE actually fits. I now have about three that fit but I have sometimes had no choice but to have a LiPo hanging off the side. They really could have given a couple mm here and there which would have made all the difference.

The only issue I've had with the Align starter is the shaft. It has always got stuck in the starter cup of my Trex 700, even when new. Thought it might be a worn cup but not the case. The shaft is now unusable. Tried to get a replacement under warranty but Skyline Models were of the opinion that the shaft is ok.

So for the time being my Align starter is out of service. Anyone know of a decent replacement shaft?

I'm looking for a mod like this Align Starter Shaft Replacement

What a ball ache that looks like!

I would rather keep hassling Skyline for a replacement tbh

I'm so glad I didn't ditch my heavy dynatron for the align starter. I have used an align and while it did eventually start my ys91 sr, it was hard going, and required 2 hand to hold it, which isn't exactly safe as it meant I'm not then holding the head.

I got the same response when mine became rounded (not from Skyline though) and they don't seem to sell just the wand it's the whole assembly for like £16.00. Rather than even risk getting another one I went ahead and modded a hex shaft from another wand I had already and I chopped the ball off so there is more engagement as well. Now if this gets worn all I have to do is chop off the lower 1/4 inch or so but I think it will last a long time now.

I just used one this weekend to start my brand new trex 700 never been started before and turned it over easy. Pretty much started first touch after one hydrolock.

I intend to do the mod on a hex tool that is hexagonal all the way along the shaft. Only hastle as far as I can tell would be drilling 2 holes in the shaft. Did you do that? I think that a couple of set screws from the reverse side of the shaft holder would secure a hex shaft, like a pinion on a motor.

How are you getting on with your ballless shaft ? I expect that it gives a much more robust coupling because of the increased contact area. I wonder if it might put undue loads on the plastic bearing block if the shaft deviates from vertical

What might be handy if you could post the lipo's you're using that fit well in the starter. For now, i'm hoping that the 3S 2200 lipo I had for my transmitter might be upto the job????

Only reporting my experience, the same with 2 different align starters on the same day, both showing fully charged lipos. I really wanted one too, just to get rid of the weight of my dyna in my box.

The LE version will be great I'm sure

The Align branded lipos fit perfectly, funnily enough

Most other lipos will fit with a bit of persuasion. Some folk cut off the outer sheath.
