  • 600/700 tail mod.

I did add to the '600LE down' post last night, but thought I would start a new thread with this information for those who have not seen my post.

Having read about the few problems that people have had of late with failing bolts on the blade grips, I purchased this kit from FL to fit to my LE.

    Fast Lad Performance

When I got the kit, these were the following instructions:

    http://www.kdedirect.com/files/AT600...on_Diagram.PDF

This is a picture of mine installed, and you can just see the additional bearing in the blade grip.

This has reduced almost all of the slop in the tail grips and control links. For the interest of those just wanting to do the additional bearing mod to the alloy grips, the bearing size is 3mm I.D. x 10mm O.D. x 4mm wide, and the replacement bolt is M3 x 0.5 x 12mm.

I'm using this kit on both my 700's... Well worth it IMO...

It looks to of taken out all the slop because it looks like both bearings are now being crushed by the bolt. What stops you from over tightening the new 12mm bolt?

Did you stick the inner race of that bearing to the bolt so it can't wear the bolt down?

Just make sure you clean out the threads on both the bolt and hub, use lock tight and just 'snug' up the bolts. They really dont have to be tightened up really tight, as that is what stresses the bolts. I have spent many years working on RC Cars and my motorbikes to know how to 'feel' how tight to do bolts up.

No they don't but the pratt at Align who puts the hubs together for us doesn't understand that. On my 700 the bolts were done up too tight and were damaged.

Your right, still cheap pay gets you cheap work. I would rather none of the kit was built. I only pull it apart straight away anyway to grease, lock tight etc..

Dont risk your bolts, get them replaced with 12.9 HT bolts. Model fixings sell them, or a local industrial fixings suppliers.

Been reading through this and the other thread mentioned previously, whilst I can't claim to be a manic 3D ace I do like speed and wasn't aware of this issue!

Maybe I've been lucky thus far but I will be changing to the mod asap and will bear in mind what's been said about the required tightness on those bolts!

              Cheers a very interesting thread

I find locating the "correct bolt" at Modelfixings a nightmare, because there are so many. Do you have a link for the bolt you used please Rob?

I've just ordered a pair of bearings and the m3x12 cap head HT bolts to do the tail on my 700, just not worth the risk for the sake of £3! Cheers Rob

Is this mainly a 700 snag, or does it also apply to the 600?

Being that the grips are the same on the 600, and Tim had it happen on his new 600LE, I'd say its firmly a problem on both!

I was wondering what all the fuss was until I came to assembling my LE tail. Mine were very tightly screwed in so I will replacing these after reviewing this and adding the second set of bearings.

To be honest I think 1/2 the problem is that the thread in the grip hub is not deap enough allowing too much play with the bolt fully tightened - probably why the factory chimps are tightening them up too much in the first place.

Rctintin what tail rotor control arm is that you have on there doesn't look like the Align upgrade...?
