  • Engine for 600LE

I've just about convinced myself to 'move to the dark side' and buy my first Nitro heli, after flying for the past couple of years with Trex 500, 450 and 250. I have decided that the heli is probably going to be a 600LE.

My question is which engine to buy. I'll be new to Nitro, so as far as possible I want to choose an engine that is most likely to 'just work'. I know a certain amount of mainteance is inevitable, but as much as possible I want to reduce the hassle factor.

Looking at the OS55 and YS56. I guess OS is more popular, but I'm worried about all the bad bearing stories that appear on the forums on OS engines. I'm more inclined to think buy YS as this stage as I have spoken to Probuild and the after sales back up for YS sounds like it is top notch.

Just keen to hear thoughts from the more experienced Nitro users on engine choice and also mufflers.

Many thanks for any words of wisdom.

    Cheers

I have an OS50 in my 600LE and its easy. Just one needle to play with and at first 2 can be a little confusing.

I'm desperate to try a 55/56 but have no need for the extra power and can not really justify the extra money as I not a very good flyer but for plug and play a 50 is easier and has enough power.

They have been used for yrs before the 55's were out and were ok.

But if I were going to get one I would get the YS as I now prefer these over the OS on the 90 guise

Hi Steve I would go along the same lines as Ben there ive a few OS50's and a couple of OS55's and unless out and out power is what your after then I would highly recommend the OS50, one of these will easily throw around and LE without too much trouble.

Ive been flying one 600 for over a year with a os50 hyper in it and its been fine, im flying mildish 3D sometimes giving the model booting and it takes it happily.
      All the best
      Tony.

To throw another one into the mix, the TT53 redline is an awesome engine for the 600 too. Parts are a lot cheaper than the OS equivalents too

Just curious, how does the fuel consumption compare between the Redline 53 and OS50 Hyper?

I have OS 50's in a few helis and for my level of flying it's plenty power.

I couldn't really quantify to be honest. My flight times were dropping anyway as I was putting more 3d moves into my flying as opposed to just circuits but don't remember the flight times dropping significantly when I put the TT53 in.

Don't get me wrong, the OS50 was providing plenty of power but when I popped it due to a lean run it was almost as cheap to buy a TT53 as it was to repair the OS50. When I then compared the costs for repairs it was a no brainer to go TT over OS (i.e. piston, ring and liner for TT53 is £49 whereas the same for the OS50 is £83, TT53 new head £23 OS50SXH new head £63 etc etc!) in addition the TT53 doesn't seem to chew through bearings like the OS did!

Thanks I'll take a look into the TT53 as well. What muffler are you using with this on the 600?

You have probably seen it but in any case I'll mention, there is (or was) a 2nd hand OS50 Hyper for sale for £65.00 on here earlier.

I would also say the TT53 is a cracking engine but too many have had problems tuning it,me included!
if you want hassle free then the os 50 is the one to go for IMO

I would take a serious look at the TT Redline 53/HiFlow pipe combo. Mine started 2nd turn out of the box and has been easy to tune and run well. Maybe they have sorted the carb out.
