Well I am over the moon thanks Mark & Squeakypete

Tried a different started today and it fired it up in no time !!! never thought it would be the starter as the starter is just over a year old and its a Sullivan which is meant to be really good. Very surprised with the fact that its struggles to start a 90. Yet the starter I used today was my old one which I kept for a rainy day !

Once again you guys have been great help..

I just saw this thread. My Align 50 Hyper is doing the same thing. I can turn it by hand but when the starter tries to turn it fast it's locked up. 'Did the whole plug out draining thing, trying to run fuel through it etc only this time it didn't start eventually

(and last time it did this my first thought was that my starter LiPo was dead but nobody's starter would spin it either)

In my case it was definitely the starter. Check your batteries they could be on the way out. In fact I tried the Align starter as well it did start my heli but took a bit longer than my old starter with the higher voltage.

I am currently running of 16 cell 19.2Volts 3700 mAh and its starting straight away.
Just had few good flights this morning and it was 0.5 deg - 3 deg air temp.

Good luck I hope you can get to the bottom of the problem.

ok m8 simple to fix ,i have the same probs as u , soooooooo ! ears what u do .
1,when u fill up ENSURE that the fuel line is crimpped off
2, spool her over if she wont plug out blow her through till she is dry
3, plug back, in spool her up at the same time connect glow and uncrimp the fuel line, she should start,WARNING ! if ur mix is abit rich she will run lumpy DO NOT LET HER STOP cos u will ave to do it all over again!
when u have had your flight keep her running and crimp off the fuel line till she runs to a stop then with the lines crimped put your starter on again and spool her up for about 45 secs, again without the glow attached , u are blowing any residue out of engine and pipe.
if u follow this simple procedure for filling and starting n stopping it will start every time! however !
even useing said method of starting there may be a time it wont want to play ! roll her over exaust side down n spool her over with fuel lines crimped off
                hope this works for u.
n oh yes if u have a mid range jet on the carb close it n see if that makes a diff on starts it could be that the mix settings are not fully ballanced out
keep 10 ft up ! ghost

Same problems here Zaidy, I have tried all of the tricks listed in this thread and it's still a real swine to get started. I also find the the one way bearing slips when trying to start, so I intend to replace it very soon. The hyper 50 on the 600 behaved similarly when it was new.

How about the starter Shaun, did you try a different one ? with different batteries ?

I tried an Align starter today for the first time, it did start it but took a bit of time (I guess Lipo's were fighting the cold) . But my old faithful starter with 19.2 V going through it made sure it starts straight away.

I hope you get to the bottom of it, I know when mine was playing up it was driving me around the bend and really spoiling my enjoyment !

Good Luck, I hope you get it sorted..

Lipos are key especially in this weather. The 3S Align pack that comes as an option with the Align starter seems bulletproof for this application.

If your using a warn pack on any starter it may suffer... especially in the cold.

I was going to ask actually, what LiPo people are using in the Align starter.

If I had known so few of mine would fit I would have chosen the option to get the battery with it.

Saturday I spent so long trying to start this 50 Hyper that my starter battery was getting too low. I had to use another one which didn't fit so it was hanging off the side

But the other thing about a problem engine is that it's not good having to crank away for ages with the starter because this puts so much wear on the starting wand and the heli starter adaptor nut. So that's another reason I will never do that again. If an angine won't start pretty darn quick then it's gotta get sorted until it does or go bye bye.

Also, when the engine hydro locks and the starter can't turn I think that runs the LiPo down much faster. Because otherwise it can go for days without needing to be charged.

Apologies for not getting back sooner. I am using a Sullivan starter with the Makita lipo mod. The lipo is fully charged etc before attempting to start. Either the engine will not spin over or the one-way bearing seems to slip or the wand is slipping. Maybe a combination of all 3! I have changed the clutch for the QUK heavy duty replacement and its still the same. Just had the engine out to check the nut on the crankshaft and its solid. I have ordered the Sullivan wand to see if its that.

It eventually starts using my mates Sullivan off a 12v battery?? and is fine once started and restarts with my setup once its warm. Maybe it needs a hot water bottle??
