  • sequence of events Help Please!

after an hour of good flying today with my 600 N, decide to take a brake then engine wouldn't start.

    faults by me;

when refueling did not clip the fuel line to the engine, engine flooded.

tired to start but wouldn't had no spanner to take glow plug off to airate engine.

cranked for about a 1 1/2 miutes not continous. then gave up came home.

gave engine a quick clean and took out all fuel inside.

    wouldnt start.

    glow plug gone...

to clear all fuel in engine gave half throttle then used starter, then new plug and viola it starts violently with head held by my hand.

i forgot to put throttle down, as quickly as possible try to apply thorrtle hold.
    say bout 20-30 seoncds.

foul burning clutch smell, then restart all seem good and sounds the same cant really tell the difference yet.

This being my first nitro (have nitro buggies), a litlte sacred to take my next flight. have i damaged something?

have i bent the con rod by any chance during flooded engine? how do i check?

    is the clutch ok?

want to be sure before i put it to flight again.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks guys.

You could have worn the clutch bell liner down?
You could have damaged the clutch?
You could have got away with it!!

Worth dropping the engine out and checking the clutch hasn't over-extended the arms, or broken. Also checking the liner.

As I'm sure you're now very aware, double check Throttle stick, hold and idle up switch positions and throttle trim before attempting to start your engine.
    Good luck!

i'm sure it'll be fine, the engine wouldn't run if you had bent the conrod in the engine, as for the clutch you may have taken a bit of life out of it but it should be fine, worst that'll happen is when you try to take off the engine will rev but the blades won't turn, i'm sure it'll be fine though, in future if you flood the engine tip the heli on its side so the exhaust side is facing the floor and gently turn the engine over by hand to clear the fuel from the engine, then just start as normal

You'll be ok! I hot started a couple of my heli's in the early days and apart from popping the odd link off the head where i grabbed it so hard they were fine.

It can happen that you bend the con rod when its flooded but the fact that it started afterwards means its not bent. And the clutch will be alright, the lining is pretty resiliant and it wont have taken much off it so long as you cut the engine within a second or two.

Just get it up again and call it a lesson learned, my hot starts taught me to always check switches, trims, and sticks, and I always glance over at the throttle arm just to be sure its low before I hit the starter.

Ditto on that. I always look at the actual arm now after once having the throttle servo reversed in the TX ! It started wide open but I killed it quickly and no damage was done.

I also double check the failsafe position.

always start the engine with the throttle hold on
as you've set the throttle up correctly the first time (ok double check it then)
                  and no more hot starts
